Oz Linden, Senior Director, Second Life Engineering and April Linden, Systems Engineering Manager, Operations, appeared at Meet The Lindens last night, with Saffia Widdershins asking some questions and moderator Patch Linden asking more by presenting questions from the audience.
This was an interesting discussion that included background on Oz and April and some very interesting and at times, personal, revelations as well as interesting discussion on technical issues, developments and processes at Linden Lab in terms of Second Life.
A couple of points of interest will have been with regards to the discussion about Second Life names, including the planned return of last names and the Environmental Enhancement Project, also known as EEP, which is at its heart an update to Windlight settings in Second Life.
In terms of names Oz and April mentioned how difficult a process changing names is, it’s far more complicated than many people think because names are not tied to a key of your avatar’s name in all parts of Second Life. This makes changing names or reintroducing surnames a much more complicated process.
There may be costs associated with name changes and Oz mentioned an issue with signups that I’ve heard mentioned before, when people are faced with choosing a first and second name from a list, people end the signup process before they’ve finished signing up.
In terms of EEP, Oz mentioned that good progress is being made and imrpoved environment settings will be arriving in Second Life and hopefully via the Firestorm viewer too.
There were a lot more issues raised, if you want to watch the full session (it’s over an hour long), then you can view it here :
Today’s Meet The Lindens is at 2pm SLT and features Linden Lab’s CEO, Ebbe Altberg.
