The 2015 Second Life Science Fiction Convention officially launched earlier this evening and there were no glitches. As a Dwarfin this was unchartered territory for me as I boldly went where no Dwarfin has gone before, to experience space, the final frontier.

The convention, which is part of the Second Life Relay For Life fundraising effort for The American Cancer Society spans six intergalactic sims, the links are the SLURL’s :

The event opened with an opening ceremony at Merciless Ming’s, which is based in Fhloston Paradise, but don’t worry if you missed it, there’s more entertainment planned for today.

• 7pm: Jazz Night Party with ITG! – The Milky Way Cabaret Theatre

However if partying with your phasers set to fun (phrase borrowed from Inara “I am your Father” Pey.) is not your thing, then there’s plenty of other things for you to see and do, but please bear in mind that the opening few days of events in Second Life can be a tad busy and progress may be slow.

My research helped me to discover a strange looking crew.

They were members of the USS Solstice and were inviting me to join them. Personally I suspect that Elves had slipped something into my drink whilst pretending to be friendly in the Scifi pub, but I will have to go back during the course of convention to see how the land really lies. Never trust an Elf, especially an Elf who wants to be an astronaut.

As with all things sci-fi there are three basic rules to obey :

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Alternatively you can follow the basic rules of Second Life :

1. First day is going to be busy, accept that.
2. Remove scripted items that you don’t really need.
3. Party like it’s 2525.

Don’t panic about getting there today, the event runs until March 1st. Most importantly, have fun!
