Despite Reports Of Being Defunct, Second Life’s 13th Birthday Celebrations Continue

Meet Ebbe Linden

Today I was reading an article over at the Inquisitr by Cal Jeffrey : No Man’s Sky’ Spoilers: Indie Developer To Revolutionize Gaming After Settling Lawsuit. The article is, as you would expect, about the hotly anticipated No Man’s Sky, which I am very interested in.

The article starts by pointing out that No Man’s Sky will still be called No Man’s Sky after settling a trademark dispute with SKY broadcasting group. This seems to be an absurd claim by the way, I am not sure how SKY had a leg to stand on, but apparently they did. The Sky was here long before the broadcaster, but I digress.

Another part of the article caught my eye :

No Man’s Sky has no plot or storyline. This aspect may be its only drawback, but the move is intentional. Hello Games wants a game where players create a story of their own. In that sense, the game is a bit like the now defunct Second Life. Second Life had no story. Players just logged in and lived their second life. The difference with No Man’s Sky is that there will be things to do in this game and there will be lore to uncover and somehow the Atlas ties into that lore.

I’m used to people saying “Second Life, is that still around?” but defunct? Nothing to do? This in the same week as Second Life is celebrating its 13th birthday!

Doc and Lindens

Today’s event schedule can be found here and again we see a mixture of events including DJ’s, live music, discussion, poetry, dance performances and more. There’s pretty much 24 hours worth of events scheduled.

Marianne McCann and I

Meet The Lindens has been a popular event at Second Life birthday celebrations in recent years and it continues to remain popular. Yesterday I joined Marianne McCann on the edge of the neighbouring region to listen in to Linden Lab CEO, Ebbe Altberg’s Q&A.

We were on the edge of the neighbouring region because there was no room at the inn on the region where the actual Q&A was taking place.

Meet the Lindens

Meet the people behind Second Life. Participants include: Torley & Brett Linden (June 20), Ebbe Linden (June 21), Landon & Oz Linden (June 22), Pete & Xiola Linden (June 23), and Patch & Dee Linden (June 24). All meetings held from 3-4 p.m. (PDT).

Visit in Second Life

On Monday Torley & Brett Linden were the guests. Inara Pey has all the details including the audio from that event, so go read all about it on Inara’s blog : SL13B talks: amplifying the awesome with Torley and Brett.

Tonight Landon & Oz Linden will be guests, tomorrow it will be Pete & Xiola and on Friday the guests will be Patch & Dee. I hope Patch hasn’t squished Dee by this stage because last night his feet were dangerously close to squishing tiny Dee.

Dee Linden and Patch's Foot

On top of all that, in addition to all the other events, there will be a music festival between Friday June 24th and Sunday June 26th.

SL Music Fest

Experience live music and interact directly with some of Second Life’s top musicians at Music Fest, held June 24-26. Full schedule at go.secondlife.com/sl13b-music-fest.

Visit in Second Life

SL Music fest will feature over 20 live artists performing over those three days. An important thing to note is that the clock schedule is not the same every day. This is good because it gives people all over the world the opportunity to pay a visit at a time that may be convenient to them.

Friday’s entertainment runs from 11am – 2:30pm SLT. Saturday runs from 8pm – 11:30pm SLT and Sunday runs from 4pm – 7:30pm SLT.

For full details of whose performing, when they are performing and where they are performing go to : http://go.secondlife.com/sl13b-music-fest/

I am only touching the surface on all the events going on to celebrate Second Life’s 13th birthday, I havent got around to talking about The Big Hunt. I’ll have to save that for another post.

Not bad for a platform that some people believe is defunct, hey 😉
