Courtesy of The Linden Endownment of The Arts, Sapphire “Sapph” Hotaling (Chief Exhibit Builder & Designer) has put together an exhibiton of The History of the Vehicle in Second Life.
The exhibit contains more than 130 vehicles created by 50 Second Life content creators and has examples of vehicles from all the way back in 2005, long before Mesh vehicles were on the grid.
A wide variety of vehicles are on display, whereas there are a lot of cars, you will also find trucks, camper vans, bikes, planes and even a horse drawn carriage.. Bear in mind that this is an exhibition with a lot of different vehicles and therefore a lot of different textures, so it may take a little bit of time before everything rezzes nicely, but don’t let that put you off, there’s a wealth of Second Life history and creativity on display here.
The region is nicely designed, so everything isn’t parked on top of each other, this gives you room to explore and find open spaces away from the traffic.
Along with serious vehicles, you will also find some fun creations that exemplify the wide range of vehicle creation within Second Life very well. One of the things that stands out with this exhibition to me is that older Second Life vehicles don’t look as dated as some older Second Life content does. Whereas Mesh has brought new life to some areas of Second Life, when it comes to vehicles, some of the older vehicles still look quite good. However, Mesh has allowed vehicle creators to get more creative and you see that exemplified too.
However this isn’t just a look at vehicles, the notecard suggests that there’s fun and entertainment to be had at weekends with concerts and live DJs mentioned. There’s a stage area setup for these sort of events. Details of planned events can be found around the region.
This exhibit successfully mixes Second Life history with creativity, it’s an interesting exhibit.
The Linden Endownment For The Arts is a collaborative effort between Linden Lab and the arts community within Second Life. The goal is to provide engaging experiences in the arts for the Second Life community and relies on resources (such as regions) being generously donated to these projects by Linden Lab.
