Another blog post has appeared over the last 24 hours, almost as if someone found a dusty box in the corner of a room and realised it is still a useful tool. This one is a quick tip video about changing your avatar appearance and promotes shopping, largely on the marketplace but it does make a reference to inworld shopping too, yes it does still exist!
The blog post can be read here, I’ll embed the video at the end of the post. This video sounds like it was produced by Torley, I mean it sounds like Torley but there’s no “Friendly Greetings!” … how can a Torley video not have friendly greetings? Did that end up on the cutting room floor because it’s a quick tip?
The video itself seems to be aimed at new users and is the sort of video that would be useful inworld at welcome areas, I’m not sure how difficult it is these days to keep YouTube videos working inworld, it would be nice to be able to put such videos in newcomer friendly places but I know that in the past, YouTube videos have had a habit of no longer working.
One thing that I did find odd about the video is that it encourages people to go and watch the shopping tutorial video for more details, but seems to have no reference to where this shopping video is, or even if it exists.
With Linden Lab promoting Second Life on Amazon and hopefully in the future, Steam, it’s important to have decent tutorial advice. Well to be fair, even without those expansions, the new user experience in Second Life isn’t great, so I hope this signals the start of Linden Lab overhauling the new user experience. I found the new user experience in Cloud Party to be vastly superior to that of Second Life, different platforms and all that but the new user experience in Second Life does need some loving.
Hopefully we’ll see more of these quick tips, we may even see the mysterious shopping video, but if Torley is going to be the voice of these videos, bring back the friendly greetings hey!
Yeah, they could slip in one of those in-screen referral links to make it click-easier.
I’ll put that in a comment on the video.

Cheers, saw the comment, it just seems a missing link to mention the shopping tutorial but not link to it.
