SL Using Google Adsense? SL Profiles Go Wild!

This is the Saturday night update, which means I’m killing time before Match of The Day starts and I want to see how the hell the mighty Villa stole a 2-2 draw with Everton. Villa v Everton is the most played top flight football fixture in the history of English football, showing the greatness of both clubs … well we can both believe we’re still great! Anyway Second Life and Linden Lab, they have gone completely busy with work at the Lab and tonight I noticed on this here site an advert in the Google Adsense section for ….. Second Life! This isn’t to be confused with the static adverts I have here for Second Life, this one was in my adsense part and made a change from seeing Habbo or IMVU there. Pics or it didn’t happen hey, well here you go:

SL advertise on Google Adsense

About bloody time I say! I almost did a jig of delight when I saw it. Then we have the issue of Linden Lab going social profile crazy with updates galore, so many I’m almost speechless, although before the guys at Linden Lab start chmapgne corks, I was only almost speechless!

The September update from Linden Lab (AKA The Lab) includes information about the new location tab in profiles. This allows you to post your current location when sharing updates via your profile, this will be really handy when your posting events or just want to tell people about the cool location you’ve found. To add your location you just click a hard to see icon:

Add a location

Then when you do add a location to your post, people can click on the location and teleport there:

Update with location

However there will be times when you don’t want your location to be shown, if you look at the first of my two pictures about locations you will see there is an x next to the location, if you click that it clears a location and then you can update without a location showing:

Location removed

I think this is a very handy feature myself. Then there’s the new ability to follow people, which is useful for people who are not on your friends list but you’d like to see their updates in your feed. However if someone is on your friends list it seems that there’s no need to follow them as you are already following them. A friend will appear like this:

Friend on Profiles

However if someone is not on your friends list for a reason, say for example they like watermelons but you’re not sure that’s your thing, you will have the option to follow that person and all you have to do is click follow, then that person’s updates will appear in your feed:

Following someone

When people follow you, you get notified about it:

Someone is following me

Names removed to protect the innocent, you will also see when people follow you on your feed, so if you’ve turned notifications off watch your feed, again names have been removed to protect the innocent and the Gingas out there:

Followers!

Again I think this is a nice feature and in terms of helping Second Life profiles, a much needed feature. I am way behind with all these Linden Lab updates though, indeed I’ve had an evening of discovery tonight because I’ve just found out that you can email pictures to flickr and that means I can use the postcard function. People often like to edit photos but sometimes they just want to send the picture, that’s what the postcard feature is for  and Flickr and Snapzilla both allow you to update via email. I had done this before using Snapzilla but tonight I had total brain failure and forgot that you need to click send before the option of a recipient email address appears, fortunately Cristiano of Snapzilla was able to politely tell me what to do, this is another useful feature and one that is not promoted enough, you can use this feature to email pictures to your friends too.

All in all, I’m liking what I’m seeing with Second Life’s social profiles and I am definitely liking the overall progress Linden Lab seem to be making, I hope it pays off for them.
