Fantasy Faire 2014 – Competitions, Ballet And Roleplaying

Details are slowly being released regarding some of the fun, games and competitions that will be available to visitors. In a blog post entitled Once Upon A Time, information about some of the areas of interest are revealed.

Stories can be told in a variety ways of course and the route this year’s event is going down includes (but is not limited to) :

MACHINIMA

Not much detail here yet but there will be the chance for five machinima artists to get early access and create their stories. More details on this are promised soon.

PHOTOGRAPHY

This year’s photo competition comes with a difference. There will be twelve winning photos, one for each sim and then one for the event overall. The winning entries will then be included in a calendar created via Cafe Press which will be sold to raise money for Relay For Life. Yes this means a real physical calendar will be available with Second Life photography on it. The winners will be fully credited for their work.

SHORT STORIES AND POETRY

There will also be competitions for short stories and poetry, however these won’t become real physical editions but winning entries will appear in Prim Perfect magazine.

BALLET

Erm… Orcs don’t do ballet, do they? Anyway, a special ballet will be staged and recorded prior to the Faire opening. This ballet will be freely available for viewing on all good Second Life blogs and some bad ones! Ok ok I made that part up but it will be available for viewing … Orcs in ballet? I don’t know, I suspect it may be more Elvish.

Fantasy Faire 2014 – Pirates, Stores And More

The Fantasy Faire 2014 website has been updated with information about sponsors, roleplay communities, stores and more. Unfortunately the sim of Wiggenstead Mooring will no longer be making an appearance under it’s original purpose due to the unfortunate ill health of Nya Alchemi. However the sim will make some sort of mysterious appearance during the Faire.

There will be Pirates at this event, they come in the shape and form of The Pirates Of Trade Winds who invite you to fill your mug with grog and join them. However if Pirates aren’t your thing then don’t worry, there will be other roleplay communities at the faire.

However for some people the faire is about the merchandies, personally I like the grog, but hey, I appreciate that some folk like to shop! Fortunately, the list of designers who will be displaying their wares is now out.

Fantasy Faire 2014 – Blogger Applications Open

I’m currently listening to The Drax Files Radio Hour Episode 14, which is all about Philip Rosedale and High Fidelity. The thing is, as funky as High Fidelity may turn out, as technologically brilliant as it may turn out, it won’t be magical until it has Fantasy Faire! Now who does have a Fantasy Faire? Second Life of course! Drax knows all about Fantasy Faire!

Now in this post I’m going to talk about blogging Fantasy Faire because Sonya Marmurek announced on April 1st in a serious post : BLOGGER APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN! First of all, let’s take a closer look at Sonya Marmurek because if you’re going to blog Fantasy Faire, you’ll need to know Sonya :

Traditionally you would apply to be a blogger and if you were accepted you would likely be assigned to some stores, last year they started to change this and this year they have changed it further, this year bloggers will get blogger challenges as an option. The beauty of these challenges is that they are open to official and non-official bloggers.

Fantasy Faire 2013 – Wrapping It Up

“Fantasy Faire is always a treat for everyone involved, but this year has been especially great. The artistry and pageantry has been mind blowing to behold, the people have been a joy and fun to be around, and the events have been great.

The Dwarfins team has been blown away by the generosity of the Dwarfins community members who have gone above & beyond in their donations to the cause of fighting cancer. We’ve been overjoyed to welcome many new members that the Faire brought to us, and have reveled in the community spirit brought to us by this great cause.” – Judy Chestnut Of Dwarfins.

All good things come to an end and I’ll pretty much wrap up my Fantasy Faire coverage with this post, although you should never say never as there may well be more news to post, but I’ll mostly wrap it up here. I apologise to those of you who read my blog and have no interest in this event, but I love this event, it’s an event that exemplifies oh so well some of the excellent use cases of Second Life and that most certainly should be highlighted.

One complaint regarding events like this, and that applies to the other fairs that take place during the year, is lag. Fantasy Faire this year wasn’t that bad, but there were some who experienced problems. The thing is, this is Fantasy Faire, if you take away the beautiful buildings, the weird and wonderful avatars and their scripted accessories, you take away some of the heart of the event.

Although Fantasy Faire 2013 is officially over, there are still a couple of Fantasy Faire related events to run. There’s a short story competition in association with Prim Perfect: Weave a tale of fantastic landscapes for the Fantasy Faire / Prim Perfect Short Story Competition. Your story should be between one and three thousand words and the best entries will be published in the summer edition of Prim Perfect Magazine. One of the good things about blogging Fantasy Faire is that I’ve now discovered the excellent Calameo system Prim Perfect use for their magazine, that’s a really impressive platform.

Fantasy Faire 2013 – The One Of A Kind Auction

Sunday night saw Fantasy Faire 2013 pretty much winding up with the one of kind auction in The Valley Of IshNar. This is an event whereby creators offer unique items for auction to raise money for Relay For Life and the event proved very popular:

Sim performance during the auction was excellent, with auctioneer Cortez Brandriss proving to be an expert auctioneer, all that experience from doing auctions for Oceania Breedables certainly came in handy there, she was fantastic.

The auction saw the fundraising effort for Relay For Life cross the eight million Linden Dollars barrier for this year’s Fantasy Faire, I don’t yet know what the final total is.
