Relay For Life in Second Life Smashes Previous Records

I’ll probably blog about the Google Plus nonsense later, but food for thought for those who feel you can’t social network without using real names, this year’s relay for life has so far raised 74,622,658 Linden dollars, that comes out at around USD$371,670, the figures aren’t finalised yet but you can follow them on the official relay for life in Second Life site.

This smashes last year’s total of USD$222,804 and also smashes the previous record total from 2009 of USD$274,000.  This brings the total amount of money raised for Relay For Life smashing through the One Million US Dollar mark since people started raising money for relay for life in Second Life back in 2004.

The figures from previous years and the history of relay for life in Second Life can be found on the wiki.

Relay For Life was well advertised this year and I myself was very pleased to see Fantasy Faire 2011 doing its part as I run a roleplaying sim and knew some of the participants there. What’s impressive about the relay for life effort is that different communities come together for a common cause, as I pointed out in my blog about the relay for life track, the Goreans were making their presence known with displays and fundraising efforts, they were flying the flag for relay for life.

Lots of different teams do their part and for more information on awards, sponsors and such like you should read the official relay for life blog. Linden Lab also played their part with message of the day advertising and an official blog post on the subject. Maybe now I’ll forgive them for deleting my forum post about Fantasy Faire 2011…… I’ll have to think about this!

The main point really though is to say well done to all the participants, all those who raised money, those who sponsored the events and the different Second Life communities who came together to raise money for this good cause.
