Draxtor Despres has published a video on YouTube of the Second Life related parts of The recent Dr Phil show. I’ll embed the video under the cut, if you’re already under the cut, then the video is at the end of the post!
I blogged about this episode of Dr Phil on Monday, the day before the episode was aired. I have not seen the full episode but the show featured the extremely serious issue of gaming addiction. The first thing to point out is that the young man who was the subject of the episode of the Dr Phil show is not a resident of Second Life. This isn’t to say that Second Life can’t prove to be addictive, but I feel it’s worth pointing out that Second Life wasn’t his game of choice.
The parts of the show that do relate to Second Life feature Dr Phil inworld with an avatar that looks like the real life Dr Phil.
There’s footage of Dr Phil exploring Second Life in a variety of transport and movement modes. There’s also footage of Linden Lab CEO, Ebbe Altberg, speaking on the Dr Phil show, rather than inworld and Ebbe talks about some of the positive aspects of Second Life and virtual worlds.
Dr Phil also states that he is not condemning video games in this episode.
I really do not want to diminish from the serious subject matter of gaming addiction that the episode highlighted. However it’s interesting to watch where Dr Phil went in Second Life, to recognise some of the locations his avatar went to and even recognise some of the avatars … Jo Yardley gets everywhere! Well to be fair Dr Phil did seem to drop in on her home, as Frau Yardley reports in this blog post.
There’s some good footage, provided I assume by Draxtor Despres, to accompany Ebbe Altberg’s comments too.
Aside from the video, other Second Life residents were out and about when Dr Phil visited Second Life. Strawberry Singh saw him. Strawberry Singh does not have the same excuse as Jo Yardley by the way, Dr Phil did not go to Strawberry Singh’s home. Actually I assume Strawberry Singh has a lair … anyway, I’m going off on a tangent!
Here’s the relevant footage, as I said, this should not diminish from the serious subject matter of this particular Dr Phil episode, but it is the relevant parts of the show for Second Life and the footage does not paint Second Life in a bad light at all.
