A Very Brief Look At CHUI

So after yesterday’s announcement from Linden Lab, I downloaded the Conversation Hub User Interface (CHUI) project viewer and installed it…. as you do. I took a very brief look at it, unlike Inara Pey, I don’t have the patience to do in depth meaningful viewer reviews. Actually Inara has taken a brief look at CHUI here.

However I can write a few words and show pictures, hurrah! Now the first thing I noticed upon login was that my notifications where were they usually were:

Notifications

However my instant messages were not, they were under the communicate menu under conversations and I wasn’t really alerted to this. At this stage, let’s remember that this is a project viewer:

Communications Menu

Clicking on conversations, brought up my conversations! This is how I knew I had new messages, from groups and people, names removed to protect the innocent but the conversation is innocent:

Now one of the features of this new project viewer is that you can look at old conversations without having to scour your hard drive for them, so I decided to test this out, I went to my friends, right clicked on one and saw an option to view chat history. I clicked this:

Trying to view chat history

Names have been removed from that list to protect the innocent! At this point, nothing happened! I should point out here that this is a project viewer. However I wasn’t going to be defeated so easily, I opened the im window and just closed it again and this time when I viewed chat history, the im window popped up again with chat history, this was actually the im window so I don’t know if this is how viewing chat history is supposed to work or not:

An Image Should Be Here
Chat History?

Conversation has been removed to protect the innocent. Then there’s the blocked objects/people feature, this is very straight forward:

An Image should be here
Blocked Options

This works well. There’s potential for a lot of good from this viewer but it is in the early stages and currently there are elements that could be redundant, for example from the communicate window, conversations and nearby chat lead you to exactly the same place. I would imagine there’s a reason for the two options, but it’s not obvious in the current viewer.

As I mentioned earlier, viewing chat history takes you to the im window, whether this is by design I don’t know, it is a nice clear way of looking at chat histories but when im and chat history take you to the same place it seems odd to have two different names for getting to there, even though your purposes for getting there may be different.

As I said earlier, this is a project viewer and in its early stages, tweaks will be made but this does have potential.
