Desmond Shang is Up To Something

There is a thread over at SLUniverse from Desomond Shang, entitled “Second Life 2015” in which The Caledon Governor ponders what may be happening with Second Life in 2015. The opening post ponders tier, vitality, seismic changes and such like. This isn’t unusual for a post from Desmond.

There is also pondering on The marketplace, which I often ponder on too and I simply can’t understand why in a 3D virtual world, Linden Lab are so obsessed with a 2D Marketplace, to the extent that they have shop links in the viewer to it, undermining the land market as it goes. Tier is way too high for Linden Lab to be playing this tune.

However it’s further into the thread that Desmond Shang reveals that he’s up to something, and then teases people by not saying much about what it is!

The comment can be found here, but the relevant part of the post for me is:

As for mixing the virtual with reality ~ I do believe this is coming sooner than most people think.

I’ve said my piece on this over at Hamlet’s blog a while back, and yeah, am ‘up to something’ ~ but it’s too early to talk about. It sucks to tease people, and I’m guilty of that plenty enough, so let me do this instead: Once I have an alpha version of something cool working, everyone’s invited to play with it. But until then it’s time to go dark on the subject.

Desmond writes guest posts now and again for Hamlet Au’s New World Notes, such as this one on augmented reality. Desmond signed off that post by saying:

One thing not mentioned: my role in this future. That was intentional, and of course it will be infinitely more subtle than selling digital billboards over major cities, or on the moon’s face. I’ll leave such things to you, dear readers. If you really want to know what I’ll be up to, just ask yourself: “What would Dr Moriarty do?” That’s the only hint I’ll give for now 🙂

See you in the future!

Desmond Shang

Now what would Professor Moriarty do? Well if Desmond starts advertising for Red Heads to do some digital work for him, be afraid, be very afraid. However, by being so vague, Desmond is creating interest, well for me anyway.

Desmond has in the past extended The Caledon brand into Blue Mars and Minecraft, just where else can Steampunk rear its head? Twenty thousand leagues under the sea I’d guess would be a coup, but I doubt Desmond has the technology to achieve that!
