Games Within Frontiers

I’m in pre St Patrick’s Parade in Birmingham mode, so I might need to get into some pre-parade drinking practice before Sunday, over 80,000 attended last year  so you need to be in good form to appreciate the atmosphere! That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it! Fortunately they have decided to hold the parade this Sunday, rather than next Sunday, which would have clashed with a Villa game, which is very considerate, also this means I might have to go into pre-pre real St Patrick’s day drinking practice mode for real St Patrick’s day next Saturday! This has potential. Anyway back to all things Second Life.

Dressing up in costumes, playing silly games

Hiding out in tree-tops shouting out rude names

So there’s a blog post! There’s a video! There are interesting stats, yes Linden Lab are talking more about the forthcoming experience tools!

Inara Pey covers this well, as usual. Hamlet Au points out the impressive fact that 250,000 players have engaged with Linden Realms, which uses these new funky tools. I’ll simply point out that this has potential but there may be a gotcha.

The tools looks useful, the teleport and temporary attachment tools are something people have been crying out for really. At the moment we use workarounds and unsatisfactory tools to get around these drawbacks in the current system.  Concentrate on the tools, you may not want to create games in Second Life but these tools have potential way beyond games, temporary attachments for example could be used for demos, the teleport system for buildings or all sorts of events and for those who do want to get into games, the teleport system means you can create your very own Mr Benn adventure …. you may need to be British to appreciate Mr Benn, I’m not sure if he went global!

I like what I’m seeing here, not just because Linden Lab are blogging on this subject but because the tools look pretty damn nifty but there’s a nagging doubt in my mind about this content creators program, or the new and improved professional content creators program with tutorials and exlusive beta access, let’s cut to the chase here, is this going to cost money? Tutorials are content that people can sell, so I have no big issue with it costing money, but if it does cost money, show me the menu. Does the professional content creators program differ from the general content creators program?

Linden Lab should really be detailing what this content creator program entails, that way people won’t be disappointed when it does arrive. However maybe this will all be announced via the Advanced Creator Tools Notification group we can join inworld.

I like the way Linden Lab are heading here, I like the look of the tools, I like the fact that they are developing new features, I like the fact that that I am excited by the potential here but I’m not so keen on the vagueness of the content creators program, spill the beans on this LL and then let us all look forward to this knowing where we stand.
