SL11B – She Sells Sanctuary

Sanctuary With Skeletons

A journey from Flickr to a blog post about Sanctuary CCS Dark Role Play Comminity’s Exhibit at SL11B aided me on a voyage of discovery at SL11B thanks to Bambi Chicque of BamPu Legacies of SecondLife.

This is an exhibit from a roleplaying community, an adult roleplaying community at that but they prove that it’s perfectly feasible to advertise on General rated sim because the content on display, the notecards, the information is all general rated.

There’s a rather nifty story too that explains the background to the roleplay. I’m a fan of roleplaying in Second Life and one of the reasons for that is that roleplaying in Second Life can be quite open ended, but that is seen by others as an annoyance. The team behind Sanctuary explain this :

Roleplay in SL is different from video games because there is NO concept of winning or losing. The goal of roleplay is to tell a story, and whether your character is the winner or loser can be equally fun. Your character in CCS is not you, but a separate person you have created within the roleplay world. Keeping this in mind can help separate yourself from your character, and help you keep having fun even when bad things are happening to your character. That’s what dark RP is all about.

Maybe one day virtual worlds will have roleplay that is guided by the creators in a more tightly knit fashion, but for now this works for Second Life and plenty of people enjoy it.

SL11B Kicks Off With A Bang

The Drax Files At SL11B

SL11B kicked off on Sunday with a feast of events ranging from talks, DJ’s, Live musicians and many a funny hat. The scale of the events taking place is extremely impressive and I haven’t even started look at the exhibits.

Draxtor Despres’ two hour live show was rather impressive as the talk with Jo Yardley, Superflufee, loz Hyde, Skypinner Soulstar and Maxwell Graf went largely without a hitch.

Meanwhile DJ Mikedacook Dinzeo was spinning tunes in the extremely impressive sim of Impressive .. no that’s really its name!

SL 11B Logo Should Be Here

Today sees the start of SL11B, to celebrate the official eleventh birthday of Second Life. A bit like The Queen, there’s more than one birthday for Second Life, which is why avatars such as Steller Sunshine are already older than eleven, but June 23rd is the anniversary that is officially recognised based on a Philip Rosedale post from June 23rd 2003 :

Residents and prospective residents,

Welcome to Second Life!

I am pleased to announce that today, Monday June 23rd, we are releasing Second Life version 1.0, and opening the service for general availability.

We’ve been able to reach this milestone through a combination of very hard work in creating a unique new technology and product, and the amazing efforts and engagement of our Early Creators and beta residents.

A ‘ball-drop’ ceremony was held in-world last night to celebrate the release.

Along with the many early residents of Second Life, let me salute our entire team of ‘Lindens’ for bringing this amazing experience to life. It has been a tremendous effort and, well worth it.

Philip Rosedale

aka Philip Linden

This year the theme of the birthday celebrations is based on a quote from Winston Churchill – “The empires of the future are the empires of the mind.

A whole host of events are planned for today to get things started with a bang.

Things To See In Second Life When You’re A Robot

The SL11B robot avatar gives one he opportunity to visit many Second Life locations and fit in with the scenery. Whereas you may not be awesome on the dance floor, unless you engage in some robotics of course, there are a whole host of suitable robot friendly locations. This is where The Destination Guide comes in really handy.

I decided to start somewhere post apocalyptic and headed for The Wastelands.

The Wastelands

Tired of pristine beaches and shiny, prefab homes? Set your heart on a boggy lot of abandoned, ramshackle-looking land? Check out The Wastelands, one of SL’s oldest and largest post-apocalyptic themed residential estate parcels.

Visit in Second Life

If I had hairs on the back of my neck they would most definitely be standing up as I explored the wasted land. Vehicles, graffitis, satellites and a feeling that at any minute I could be attacked. Fortunately being a robot means I can sense people and danger. Unfortunately being a robot means I can’t hurt humans so when a couple approached I had to duck for cover.

I could not hear what was being said, but I could see that the woman was armed, with a big gun that this photo does not quite portray, but trust me, she had a big gun.

Robot In The Wastelands

At this point self preservation kicks in and I decided it may be time to depart before I find myself in trouble. Checking available destinations I decide I should head somewhere a little more robot friendly.

Free SL11B Robot Avatars Available At Hairy Hippo Fun Land

Hairy Hippo Fun Land

Linden Lab have blogged about a new free gift for SL11B, explaining that it’s a limited edition fitted mesh avatar and therefore you need a viewer compliant with fitted mesh to really utilise said gift. Now you have a choice of where to get the avatar from, you can be boring and get it from The Marketplace or you can be a bit more adventurous and go to the more amusingly named inworld location of Hairy Hippo Fun Land!

There are many advantages of going to the inworld location, you get cake, teddy bears, meet people and try and find a spot to rez your boxed fitted mesh avatar. I actually teleported to a sandbox and TP’d back. However once you are in your avatar please be aware that you may well be expected to follow Asimov’s three laws of robotics, especially the second law!

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I discovered that people expect law 2 to be observed whilst I was exploring Hairy Hippo Fun Land and someone shouted to me “Oi, oi you, oi, Robot man, where did you get that avatar?” Now being duty bound I led said person to the vending machine that dispenses the avatars and explained to them that they have to keep clicking until the hover text shows Robot Avatar instead of teddy bear, then I ran away, I didn’t see any law of robotics forbidding that sort of action.
