Tyche Shepherd’s Awesome Mainland Census March 2013

Tyche Shepherd has published the results of her mainland survey for the first quarter of 2013 over at SLUniverse : Mainland Census For 2013. The results reveal that three mainland sims have disappeared from the grid, all homesteads and all bordering The Blake Sea.

Unlike private region surveys, mainland doesn’t change much in shape or size unless Linden Lab launch something like Linden Homes or they auction off new sims, which doesn’t really happen these days, so the figures don’t change much in terms of the number of sims. There are currently 6,726 mainland sims on the grid, in December 2011 there were 6,723 so not much change over the last year or so. Tyche’s census also doesn’t include around 360 sims which are made up of help islands or Linden Realms.

Where the mainland census does see changes is with regard to things such as the total number of parcels, the number of owners and the amount of abandoned land. This survey reveals:

  • Number of Parcels – 14,5238 (Down 2.2%)
  • Unique Owners – 67,405 (Down 1.8%)
  • Abandoned Land – Between 51,388,816Sqm and 55,615,680Sqm or 11.7% to 12.6% (Up from 10.6% – 11.6%)

Abandoned Land has increased by somewhere around 66 to 70 full regions since last quarter’s census, giving an overall total of 784 to 840 full regions. Abandoned Land has been on the increase since September 2011.

2012 Reviewed – October To December

October

Away from Second Life, Kitely announced that were now offering unmetered regions. Prior to this Kitely had charged for metered usage… I think maybe you could have worked that out yourselves!

Linden Lab emailed those who had signed up for their affiliate program to inform them it was ending on October 16th.

Merchants were calling for a meeting with Lindens regarding concerns. This would lead to further issues later in the year as Merchants struggled to be heard.

Tyche Shepherd’s weekly survey on the size of the main grid revealed that private regions were down 9.9% for the year to date, this would get worse before the end of the year.

Linden Lab reported performance improvements, informing us that there had been a 7% improvement in teleport performance in peak concurrency hours and an 86% reduction in group query times. Good stats.

The Communications Hub User Interface Project Viewer was unleashed as Linden Lab worked to improve communications in Second Life. At this point I pondered whether these recent blog posts indicated that Linden Lab were going to continue to make better use of their blog, unfortunately they didn’t.

Linden Lab continued to work on improvements as Oskar Linden posted in the forums that the snack release channel being used to test large group fixes.

Copyright infringement reared its head as claims were made that CBS were clamping down on infringing Star Trek related content in Second Life.

Buzzfeed carried an article as part of a tech confessional from a former Linden who talked about walking in on users having (virtual) sex, being a Second Life celebrity, and why it was such an inspiring job, oh and furies!

Private Estate Losses Reach 12% For The Year

Tyche “Statto” Shepherd reports a net loss of 106 sims this week in her awesome survey post over at SLUniverse. Linden owned regions increased by 16 this week, but private estates were down 122. This makes the year to date loss of private regions from the grid 2,863, which is 12% down for the year.

The increase in Linden Regions comes from the arrival of 18 Linden Realms staging regions, so it looks like we may get some new fun sims to explore. However amongst the losses are sims owned by Dell, IBM, The US Army and The British Council. However the vast majority of the 122 losses are not corporate sims.

The good news for Linden Lab is that the size of the main grid still stands at 28,097, of these regions 20,994 are private regions with the other 7,103 being Linden owned. This means there’s still a very healthy amount of usage, but the trend remains downwards.

By my estimates private region ownership is somehwere around the level it was at in June 2008, although in June 2008 we had seen some large growth during the year.

Tyche Shepherd’s Awesome Private Estate Survey For September

Hot off the presses is Tyche Shepherd’s awesome private estate survey, September 2011 edition. The survey is based on a sample of 5,000 randomly selected private estate regions, which is a high enough number to get some  pretty decent figures from.

The survey tells us that Anshe Chung is losing sims, but not that many as quite a few are ending up in the hands of The Chung Sisters and when you add ACS Dreamland, Azure Islands and The Chung Sisters holdings into the pot together, Anshe’s organisation is top of the pile with 7.9% but this is 0.7% down on last month.

The big climber appears to be LaLa estates, who are now in second place as an independent group, with a 0.6% increase this month, top of the charts however is RGF Estates, with 5.7%. Confused? Anshe’s holdings are in different groups, so RGF is top as an independent entity but Anshe’s group is overall top when you add together all the different groupings, however as individual entities they are behind RGF and Lala estates.
