Protecting The Teens Is Stifling The Community

Yesterday I mentioned that Linden Lab’s intent to provide a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered (here on in abbreviated to LGBT) forum could be misconstrued because there was mention of the forum being private or age restricted. The people who were in favour of this forum, people such as Amanda, Lexie and Blondin are not homophobic, old fashioned or insensitive to the LGBT community, but someone at Linden Lab seems to have a book of moral code straight out of the 1950’s.

This isn’t just a problem for an LGBT forum, it’s an issue for events where music from John Lee Hooker could be problematic, it was problematic on the forum where Dick Van Dyke was a no no at one stage, it’s problematic on the Jira where you can’t tell someone a master and slave device gets a product flagged as adult, it’s problematic on the marketplace where the ridiculous no references to alcohol rule is listed, although I’m not sure it’s enforced. The latter is particularly absurd as World of Warcraft which is aimed at those thirteen upwards, has plenty of references to alcohol, so whomever it is at Linden Lab who lives in fear of sixteen year olds being exposed to such things, should be asking Blizzard why it doesn’t bother them one iota.

However the problem really isn’t to do with exteme moral thinking, it’s to do with laibilities and the teens, and the poor teens don’t deserve to be being used as a political football.

No sex please, we’re Californian!

There was an interesting community tools user group meeting tonight, where the adult forum concept was put to bed, for reasons that still make absolutely no sense. Linden Lab seem to be absolutely scared to death of teens seeing anything remotely adult, to such an extent that they come across as being scared of their own shadow. There’s nowhere on the forum to discuss adult products in a mature fashion for general users, and by this I don’t mean xxx porn pictures and lurid discussions of graphic sexual exploits, I mean sensible discussion of adult themes.

This is perfectly feasible, Linden Lab have private forums to keep prying eyes away but there appears to be absolutely no will from Linden Lab to allow these discussions. There are private forums for merchants, bizarrely adult land owners and merchants, the Atlas landowners group, soon to be LGBT but not for adult consumers.

Back To The Grindstone

Fantasy Faire 2011 is over, and it ended with a bang because I went to an event on Sunday only to find they’d locked my chief Elf in a magical prison and were demaning bail money for her to be released! I toyed with the idea of leaving her in there. However this was bad timing, because at the same time I received a note to inform me that the Pirates wouldn’t recognise the new Queen and had occupied the lighthouse, then a dragon upset a unicorn and I found myself looking at a pool of blood, which looked like it needed CSI to investigate, a mermaid swam past too ….

Yes I was back on my RP sim to catch up on all the happenings, and really, I go away and they let lots of things happen, which is great. However I’m also finding myself enthused about doing things in Second Life again, I’m just not sure what!

Blogs, Forums and Land

One has to wonder whether Linden Lab have something up their sleeve regarding income streams, because land no longer seems to be flavour of the month. I’m scratching my head trying to figure out what exactly it is that they feel can supplement the tier system for income, I’m not seeing any strong hints anywhere.

The issue of land came up at last night’s community tools user group where people asked whether there would be a land user group, no plans was the answer, no plans to replace Jack’s office hour, which remained the land office hour long after Jack ceased being responsible for land! There is however a land discussion forum, a private one, for the top secret Atlas members but it seems some of them aren’t happy with the forums and they want an estate land for sale section, but Linden Lab seem reluctant to push land lately, which brings me back to wondering what’s going on.
