Can Resident Made Machinima Be Used To Promote Second Life?

I recently asked : Can Linden Lab Follow The Draxtor Despres Lead? In that post I pointed to The Drax Files as being a very good example of how to promote Second Life. I also pointed out that Linden Lab may have difficulty in pulling something like this off due to the potential complaints from other residents, although that challenge is not insurmountable.

Now during the last few days a moonwalking Shetland Pony is doing wonders for the promotion of the Three Mobile Network here in the UK:

Now something like that is going to cost an arm and a leg for an advertising agency to produce, but it does point out awfully well how promotion on a platform such as YouTube can make great strides for your product.

Could Linden Lab Follow The Draxtor Despres Lead?

One thing that Draxtor Despres has exemplified so well in his opening episode of The Drax Files is how well video can be used to promote Second Life. The question therefore must be, where Draxtor Despres leads, can Linden Lab follow?

Let’s rewind a little first, Linden Lab, in association with The Linden Endownment For The Arts, used to run a an official month of machinima. The playlist can still be viewed on youTube. Whereas this playlist has many films, they are films first and Second Life related second, that’s no bad thing and is a good demonstration of machinima in Second Life, but it doesn’t do what Draxtor has achieved with his mixed real person virtual person production.

On their blog, Linden Lab give a lot of time and space to the Second Life Picture Of The Day. There are some stunning images on there and a picture can speak a thousand words, it’s good promotion but it doesn’t get behind the person or the place in the way that Inara Pey and Honour McMillan do….  they’ve both blogged about the University of Western Australia’s machinima contest, with one million Linden Dollars worth of prize money, including a top prize of 200,000 Linden Dollars. I have a pub to go to and beer to drink, I don’t have time to be sidetracked like this! Go read Inara or Honour for more details.

Where was I, oh yes, telling the story of the person behind the images. Linden Lab did try and get something like this going with some blog posts, Strawberry Singh was one of the guest bloggers, writing a post about twelve months ago, but the concept didn’t really gain traction. Highlighting the difficulties Linden Lab face regarding editorial content on these issues.

One challenge that Linden Lab face that, with all due respect, Draxtor, Honour and Inara don’t face, is that of editorial impartiality, if Linden Lab feature one resident, lots of other residents will complain.

Farewell Superflufee

Superflufee, your cuddly megastar made of mesh, roaming the virtual world & possibly in love with a prim lady, is moving on to pastures new in what appears to have been an intellectual property faux pas. I say faux pas because it’s ten to midnight here and I didn’t want to say au revoir….. yeah that was cheesy.

Anyway, I say faux pas because here was good brand promotion, Draxtor Despres, Pooky Amsterdam and many others have been exemplifying their excellent machinima of Superflufee over at meshinima.com for quite a while now. This promoted machinima really well, it also promoted the mesh avatar flufee very well, that’s what I mean by brand awareness.

Alas all good things come to an end and it seems as if the people who own the intellectual property rights of the avatar, don’t see the value in the machinima and want to move in a different direction. I don’t know the full ins and outs, I haven’t spoken to Draxtor Despres, Pooky Amsterdam or the IP owners of flufee the avatar, although you will find many flufee items being sold on the marketplace, which brings us back to the brand awareness issue because I wouldn’t know about that if I hadn’t seen the machinima!

The Future Of Machinima Looks Bright

Over at Venture Beat, Dean Takahashi has a post about one of the discussion panels from the Machinima-Expo. Dean was a panelist on the discussion, there’s a video in Dean’s article of the discussion. The future for Machinima looks bright, but will it ever make a mainstream breakthrough? That seems to be the crux of the issue.

Dean concludes that he is seeing little evidence of Machinima going mainstream but with lower costs for producing Machinima and an active indie scene, it looks sure to grow in popularity. This year’s Machinima-Expo does look to have been a roaring success, so from that point of view, the future does indeed look bright.

Machinima of course goes way beyond Second Life, there are apparently new tools for film making coming from Valve and the Unreal 4 Engine for game developers, the ability to make better Machinima is conntinually improving.

Machinima Expo Open Now!

I was asking on Twitter “What has happened to Metareality Podcast?” being as the site hasn’t been updated for a month, when I received the shocking news from @Draxtor:

we all died of food poisoning and I’m speaking from beyond grave. Meantime – check @machinexpo kicking off today!!!

Oh no! How terrible!” thought I, quickly followed by “Wait a minute …. they’d have got away with it if it wasn’t for those pesky kids!

Therefore I found myself at the Machinima-Expo website. A quick step off topic here, if we could have Group pages similar to our profile pages, just think, not only could people follow this on Twitter, they could follow it via mysecondlife too! Where was I, oh yes, the machinma-expo. The expo runs from November 16th – November 18th and is being broadcast live 24/7.

The expo is taking place in Second Life, so you can attend there or via the website I linked above.
