Duran Duran’s Paper Gods Album Release Will Be Celebrated In Second Life With A Party On September 12th

Duran Duran on Vinyl

Duran Duran, today released their 14th studio album; Paper Gods. To celebrate the release of the album there will be an album release party in Second Life tomorrow, Saturday 12th September at 1pm Pacific time. I have no idea why Pacific time is being listed for this event instead of SLT, by my reckoning they equate to the same time. Please note that there is apparently a dress code for this party :

Join the fun at the “Paper Gods” album release party at the giant record player on Khanada at Duran Duran Universe in Second Life. Event held Saturday, September 12th at 1 p.m. (Pacific). Dress code strictly light pink and light blue.

The party itself has been organised by those who officially represent Duran Duran in Second Life.

Duran Duran Record Player

Duran Duran, it should be noted, have a whole section of the Second Life Destination Guide dedicated to them, which includes a number of locations on neighbouring sims.

SL12B – Get Ready For The Linden Lab Sponsored Music Fest

Diamonique Viper

Sl12B is like previous Second Life birthday events full of great entertainment, you can keep an eye on all the events on the performance schedule. This year there’s an added bonus in the shape and form of Music Fest, which has been sponsored by Linden Lab.

Dancing to Dregoon Resident

Xiola Linden has posted details of the two day event, in a blog post : Rock Out at the SL12B Official Music Fest!

Over two days, we’ll feature an amazing line-up of those artists, across many genres of music, and we hope you will come join us. It’s all the fun of a music festival without the over exposure to the sun, the grueling sludge through the mud, or the long haul and long lines of those questionable public bathrooms. It’s a bring your own refreshments and get ready to dance your pixels off kind of event – check out who’s playing, then grab your ride to the festival below.

Many thanks to Doctor Gascoigne and his team of volunteers for helping finalize the details with all our performers!

The event will take place on Friday 26th June and Saturday 27th June.

Exploring The Dirty Grind And Jasmine’s Hollow

The Dirty Grind

Second Life is at its heart a social platform and that means engaging in social activities such as lively debates, the arts, music and more. Fortunately The Destination Guide has a section to help us find music and from there I decided to head off to The Dirty Grind overlooking Jasmine’s Hollow.

There I found a delightful steampunk inspired sim that ticks a long very nicely, this may be in a large part due to the cogs and clocks that are scattered around the location.

Steam Engine And Ship

The Dirty Grind describes itself as an Independent Artist Community. When you land there a notecard is offered, which provides some information on the region. There’s also a website and from there we learn :

Open to the public 24/7! The Dirty Grind™ is a steampunk™ haven for music and visual art. Come for over 30 hours of eclectic live professional recording artists that span from heavy metal and rock to folk and jazz and explore the venue’s many surprises and games. Enjoy our family of musicians featured on our 24 hr radio station, Radio Grind™ and explore our artists and buy their work at Radio Grind presents…

They also offer in Jasmine’s Hollow shop and home rentals as well as having options to hold events or rent gallery space. Independent musicians are not the only artists here, there are quite a few independent artists displaying their wares.

Bear in mind though that this is a moderate rated region so you are likely to be chased out of town if you want to commercially run anything adult. This isn’t a place for overtly adult activities and they make this clear in their information.

The Return Of Virtual Reality Or The Return Of Hype?

Over at The Guardian, Charles Arthur has posted a very interesting article reagarding Virtual Reality : The return of virtual reality: ‘this is as big an opportunity as the internet’. What I find very interesting about this article is that it highlights hope, hype, caution and excitement. There’s also a really cool video from 1994 during an earlier round of Virtual Reality hype which I’ll embed later in this post.

Many of us know about the hype, we’ve seen it with virtual worlds and whereas virtual worlds have delivered in many ways, they haven’t delivered in that massive way that many were predicting they would a decade or so ago.

Predictions about the boom in Virtual Reality go back a lot further and the article points this out. Charles talks to Dr Jonathan Waldern, who has seen the hype and hope before but is absolutely revelling in the new found VR hope wave and is quoted as saying :

There will be people crying in this, people falling in love, people falling over. For all sorts of reasons, this strikes at the core of being a human being. It’s so compelling … this is as big an opportunity as the internet.

I think we’ve heard claims such as that before too. However Dr Jonathan Waldern isn’t new to the VR scene, he was involved with a company called Virtuality in the 1990’s who had been bringing VR to arcades. The company had been in talks with Atari about bringing their VR Headset, Jaguar, to the consumer market, and then, with very little warning, the hype and hope for VR died.

However one of the hurdles in the last wave of VR hype was cost. Dr Waldern’s company were using top of the range Silicon Graphics systems, which were not in the consumer end of the market at all, they cost six figure sums for a start. These days people have more power and better graphics at far lower costs. Dr Waldern points out some of the differences this time around :

“Our system used some of the very first Sony LCDs, with 300 by 200 pixels,” Waldern recalls. “Today you get 1,080p [1,080 horizontal lines] minimum, and by the launch next year you’ll probably have 4K by 4K. And the computational power is transformational – we were working on about a megaflop, and each machine cost about $70,000, which is a massive barrier to adoption. Now with an Nvidia GPU you’re talking about a teraflop.”

However even today, there are those who are enthusiastic but don’t feel we’re quite there yet.
