Kite Co

Recently I met and started to work for Sim and Zaya Chrispson, as a marketing agent. Their umbrella company is Kite Co. Kite Co incorporates a few other businesses as do most umbrella companies.

In this case, the cart came before the horse. Sim started off with 6 Kinds of Wednesday, 6KW is the mainstay of Kite Co. With no inworld store, 6KW is strictly Market Place accessible. Sim started his KiteCo Corporation with this inexpensive but extremely well made full perm textures. If you are a builder and have never taken a look at what 6KW has to offer, you really need to take a look. Please review what you think of them.

Kitemart [K*M] – A Market Place department superstore that houses several product lines and brands owned and/or distributed by Kite Co. and its various divisions. They Include Lily’s Farm-aceuticals, [VBV] Venderful Beverage Vendors, !AF! Angry Ferret, and Slushy. Again no inworld store and is strictly available on the market place

The other companies are as follows.

** Mayday Aviation Lounge ^MAL^ This lounge/bar and its decor are centered around Airplane crashes!

There is an upper deck and a lower deck. This DJ session takes place on the upper deck. The RUNWAY PLANE CRASHES are every 10 minutes. A very unique event to experience.

Mayday proudly carries unique aviation-themed beer, wine, and cigars made by [VBV] Venderful Beverage Vendors. Belly up to the bar and watch, listen, dance, and just relax and have a great time. Drop a notecard and let us know what you think of Mayday.

Mayday Aviation Lounge ^MAL^ is a division of Kite Co.

Next we have The Shhh! Silent Movie Theatre. A simply wonderful step back in time. Open 24 hours for your viewing pleasure. A free Inworld silent movie theater experience that pays homage to amazing movies and performers from the silent movie era, including Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and Buster Keaton. A fun trip into the fantasy of yesterday! Completely done in black and white. This brings back silent movies and is a wonderful place for a date night.

Then we have Kaleidoscope Eyes Breakfast Cafe. A Beatles themed cafe where you can listen to Beatles music, Experience that “hippie” side of yourself. It is quite amazing! Do you remember the old kaleidoscopes? Visiting this charming venue is like stepping back into the 60s. A free cafe featuring a breakfast buffet. It exclusively hosts Lily’s Farm-aceuticals brand Herbal Teas. It’s decor is based around the song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ by The Beatles.

Ok, well I have saved my personal favorite until last! RESET Retro Arcade. If you remember Mario Brothers, PacMan, Arcade games. OMG and not only are these cutouts life-size they are so realistic!!! I was, to be honest, STUNNED when I first saw them. All textures were made by Sim Chrispson. A free Inworld Arcade featuring playable 1980’s/1990’s game cabinets and decor.

VWBPE Keynotes and Immersive Experiences

Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference is scheduled to run from April 4th – 6th, but as well as the main conference there are events happening outside those dates for people to explore and enjoy.

Scheduled keynote speakers are :

  • Dr. Tom Boellstorff, Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of California, Irvine.
  • Dr. Tuncer Can, Assistant Professor, English Language Teaching Department, Istanbul University.
  • Dr. Jonathon Richter, Chair of Digital Design Technologies at Salish Kootenai College on the Flathead Indian Reservation in western Montana and co-founder and Executive Director of the Immersive Learning Research Network.

You can read more about the keynote speakers on the VWBPE official page about keynotes.

Whereas the conference officially starts on April 4th, you don’t have to wait until April 4th to get into the VWBPE spirit because immersive experiences will be available before and after the main conference, indeed some have already opened up.

Yuri’s Night Coming To Second Life And Kitely

Yuri's Night

On April 12th 1961 Yuri Gagarin, a Russian Cosmonaut, took the spacecraft Vostok into Outer Space. Twenty years later, April 12th 1981, NASA’s first Space Shuttle was launched. Celebrations of these events take many shapes and forms.

Yuri’s Night is very much part of those celebrations and even goes boldly into virtual worlds, Second Life and Kitely are two virtual worlds you should be familiar with.

Orbiting Planets

The Celebrations in Second Life are co-sponsored by the International Spaceflight Museum and the National Space Society.

They are planning a whopping five hours of celebrations starting at 3pm SLT today.

The event launches (sorry couldn’t resist) at the International Spaceflight Museum in Second Life :

  • 3:00-4:00 pm – Dance to our “Space Filk & More” audio stream.
  • 4:00-5:00 pm – DJ Aristippus spins space-themed tunes and songs of the Space Age.

Then the party moves on to The Sagan Planetarium in Second Life.

2014 Reviewed All In One Post

If you’re read my other two posts reviewing then there’s nothing new here in this one, it’s just a merging of the two posts to make it easier for future reference. This means it will be a long post, with pictures, videos and probably some errors.

January

January started with a look back to 2013 and the number of private region losses. The scores on the door from Tyche Shepherd displayed a slow down on the number of regions leaving the Second Life grid, something that would continue during 2014.

  • 2012 Net Private Region Losess – 2865 (12.0%)
  • 2013 Net Private Region Losses – 1719 (8.2%)

The virtual world of Kitely moved to a different pricing model which largely did away with the pay by the minute options as these had not been popular.

Season 2 of The Blackened Mirror was taking a mid-season break but would return by the end of January. The show was recorded in Second Life.

Linden Lab were Raising The Roof : The HTTP Project. This project, which had started in 2012 was aimed at improving HTTP communications to improve the end user experience. Linden Lab would continue working on improvements during the year.

Second Life users were getting frustrated by tax and account information requests from Linden Lab. They would continue to be frustrated by these requests throughout the year despite Linden Lab improving their communications and information on these issues.

Second Life got a mention in the comedy show, 2 Broke Girls.

Then came the storm to warm up many a chilly January evening, Cloud Party announced that they would be closing their virtual doors on February 21st.

Pirates? Ahoy?

This was quickly followed by even more news to warm up January, Aston Villa fan and Linden Lab CEO, Rod Humble, was leaving Linden Lab. This created a Twitter storm.

2014 Reviewed Part 1 : January To June

In this post I will review 2014 from a largely virtual world perspective for the months January to June. This is part 1 of 2 as part 2 is still a work in progress but will hopefully appear tomorrow. I’ll combine both posts into another post for easier future reference once they are both completed. These posts will miss lots of big and interesting stories because the nature of the beast demands some brevity. These post may well look longer than they actually are at first glance because of images and pictures. The aim of posts such as these are to give a brief overview of the year, rather than an in depth review. An in depth review is too long for a blog post, it may make for an interesting book.

Anyway, on with the show, as they say.
