As a cosmopolitan and dynamic society Naples was a focal point of European economic, cultural, and political activity, and its government was a leader in political reform up until the time of the French Revolution. The work of Neapolitan thinkers had considerable impact beyond the kingdom; its artists and musicians were sought after by royal and noble patrons throughout Europe; and the Kingdom was a commercial and manufacturing hub for the Mediterranean community.

Having been created in SL to be a part of the Kingdom of Naples, Rocca Sorrentina presents this exhibit as an overview of the people, events, ideas, and natural and man-made environment that made Naples so special in the late 18th century.

—————————

ROCCA SORRENTINA
Exhibit: After the Sea: Changing European Artistic Views of the New World
Where: Showcase Gallery, Rocca Sorrentina
When: September 5, 2015 – October 24, 20155
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Rocca%20Sorrentina/87/163/2801
􀀀
Description:
“After the Sea,” an exhibit by Peter von Leuctenberg, shows how European artistic images of the New World changed from the time of the initial discovery of the Americas to the 18th century. Through paintings and sculpture we see the New World through the eyes of European artists. This exhibition is an affirmation of an America that was completely reshaped by contact with the Old World, but which in turn reshaped the Old World itself. National, economic or religious interests aside, in the first two centuries of involvement with the new world, Europe was transformed by the land discovered by Columbus, and that transformation and changing understanding was reflected in its art and ideas.

—————————

RENAISSANCE ISLAND
Exhibit: Masterpieces of Renaissance Art: Raphael and the Sistine Chapel
When: August 11, 2015 – November 29, 2015
Where: The Manor Music Room, Renaissance Island
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Renaissance%20Island/92/212/26
Description:
In 1516 Pope Leo X commissioned the Italian master artist Raphael to design ten tapestries on religious themes to be hung on special occasions on the lower walls of the new Sistine Chapel. Raphael’s designs (the paintings are called “cartoons”) were executed in the workshop of Flemish tapestry master Pieter van Aelst. Both the tapestries themselves and the seven surviving cartoons stand as masterpieces of High Renaissance art. This exhibit places the tapestries and the cartoons side-by-side for the viewer to compare and enjoy.
