{"id":5024,"date":"2015-06-05T19:33:01","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T18:33:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sl.governormarley.com\/?p=5024"},"modified":"2015-06-05T19:33:01","modified_gmt":"2015-06-05T18:33:01","slug":"desura-faces-uncertain-future-as-bad-juju-games-file-for-bankruptcy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sl.governormarley.com\/?p=5024","title":{"rendered":"Desura Faces Uncertain Future As Bad Juju Games File For Bankruptcy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desura.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Desura<\/a>, the digital distribution platform for gamers which Linden Lab sold to Bad Juju Games in November faces an uncertain future according to an article in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockpapershotgun.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rock, Paper, Shotgun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An article by Alice O&#8217;Connor,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockpapershotgun.com\/2015\/06\/05\/desura-bankruptcy-bad-juju-games\/\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Disturbance: Desura Owner Files For Bankruptcy<\/a>, explains :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Following troubles and discontent with developers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockpapershotgun.com\/2015\/05\/22\/desura-late-payments-developers\/\" target=\"_blank\">being paid late<\/a> by Desura, the digital distribution store\u2019s owner Bad Juju Games have filed for bankruptcy. A member of Bad Juju confirmed the bankruptcy filing with us today, but the company haven\u2019t made a statement yet or said anything about what\u2019ll happen with people owed money or games folks have bought or whether the store will continue, or\u2026 anything. More will follow, I\u2019m sure.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The late payments issue had come to a head late in May and they were initially been blamed on issues such as not having an automated payment system. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desura.com\/news\/may-27th-update\" target=\"_blank\">Desura released a statement<\/a> to try and calm developers worst fears down. In the statement they said :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The second rumor, that we are going out of business, is also false. We are in fact exploring some very exciting new avenues in terms of partnerships and growth opportunities. The payout issues are not an indication that we don&#8217;t have the funds to pay. I&#8217;ve always felt that a digital distribution platform such as Desura has a lot of potential. However when it comes to digital distribution there are some big players already in that market and of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steam<\/a> pretty much rule the roost. I like Steam, I like it a lot, but from both a developer and consumer point of view, alternative options are always good.<\/p>\n<p>I hope there&#8217;s a happy ending for Desura developers and customers, but in situations like this, it&#8217;s always best to prepare yourself for the worst.
