OpenSim SciFi may seem like an odd fit at the Second Life Science Fiction Convention, indeed your first thought may well be “These aren’t the droids we’re looking for.” However you would be wrong because in a similar fashion to storytellers, SciFi spread across OpenSim and Second Life with the communities working together even if the technologies don’t. I caught up with Lani Global to chat about OpenSim SciFi.<\/p>\n

First things first, I had to make sure that Lani wasn’t an evil sith Lord or lady, she frowned and then replied :<\/p>\n

“I doubt that the OpenSim universe has been conquered as an empire yet, but there are many trying!<\/em>”<\/p>\n

However more importantly, how popular is SciFi in OpenSim, this was a question that received a warmer reply :<\/p>\n

“Sci Fi is probably one of the most popular themes in OpenSim.<\/em>” Lani told me, she also told me that she has her own Hypergrid enabled OpenSim location “My main region called “Lani” has been enabled for HyperGrid since 2010. It gets about 15,000 unique visitors per year, and about 20% of them are via HyperGrid.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

Now one thing about OpenSim is that NPC’s are easier to create, so I asked the all important question, how on earth can OpenSim deal with an Attack Of The Clones?<\/p>\n

“Since we have our own Clona Army, we can handle huge attacks, on a vast battlefield of galactic proportions.” Lani replied, without a smirk in sight. I think she’s serious!<\/p>\n

However how do the OpenSim folk get involved with Second Life? This is where Lani told me that there are cross platform communities :<\/p>\n

“The OpenSim Sci Fi Group is an entity in Second Life as well as OpenSim. Many of us cross between the various grids and are multi-world spacefarers. \u00a0We exhibit at all the Sci Fi Conventions and events.\u00a0Our secret base is on a planet that is shielded from public view.<\/em>”

Talk of a secret planet intrigued me greatly, but I decided it was time to go back to a place where Dwarfins are more welcome. Lani left me with a hearty goodbye :<\/p>\n

“May your footsteps be soft upon the sand; May the Giant Worms make a smooth path through the dunes of your future destiny.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

Indeed!<\/p>\n
