This is part 1 of 2 as part 2 is still a work in progress but will hopefully appear tomorrow. I&#8217;ll combine both posts into another post for easier future reference once they are both completed. These posts will miss lots of big and interesting stories because the nature of the beast demands some brevity. These post may well look longer than they actually are at first glance because of images and pictures. The aim of posts such as these are to give a brief overview of the year, rather than an in depth review. An in depth review is too long for a blog post, it may make for an interesting book.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, on with the show, as they say.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>January started with a look back to 2013 and the number of private region losses. The show was recorded in Second Life.<\/p>\n<p>Linden Lab were <a title=\"Raising The Roof\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Tools-and-Technology\/Raising-the-Roof-The-HTTP-Project\/ba-p\/2416075\" target=\"_blank\">Raising The Roof : The HTTP Project<\/a>. This project, which had started in 2012 was aimed at improving HTTP communications to improve the end user experience. Linden Lab would continue working on improvements during the year.<\/p>\n<p>Second Life users were getting frustrated by <a title=\"Tax proves to be taxing\" href=\"http:\/\/sl.governormarley.com\/?p=3562\" target=\"_blank\">tax and account information requests from Linden Lab<\/a>. They would continue to be frustrated by these requests throughout the year despite Linden Lab improving their communications and information on these issues.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Second Life On 2 Broke Girls\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sluniverse.com\/php\/vb\/tv-film\/91694-sl-gets-mention-2-broke.html#post1891576\" target=\"_blank\">Second Life got a mention<\/a> in the comedy show, 2 Broke Girls.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the storm to warm up many a chilly January evening, Cloud Party announced that they would be closing their virtual doors on February 21st.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Pirates? Ahoy? by Ciaran Laval, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ciaran_laval\/10842735063\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7317\/10842735063_a008e9fda7.jpg?resize=500%2C357\" alt=\"Pirates? Ahoy?\" width=\"500\" height=\"357\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was quickly followed by even more news to warm up January, Aston Villa fan and Linden Lab CEO, Rod Humble, was <a title=\"Rod Humble Leaves Linden Lab\" href=\"http:\/\/joyardley.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/24\/rod-humble-leaves-linden-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\">leaving Linden Lab<\/a>. This created a Twitter storm.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ciaran_Laval\">@Ciaran_Laval<\/a> Yes. Second Life content creator Porky Gorky, an avid Eve-Online fan, was unharmed.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in a war of another sort, Linden Lab updated their bot policy to make it so that the <a title=\"Linden Lab update Bot Policy\" href=\"http:\/\/modemworld.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/30\/lab-updates-bot-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\">purchase of mainland parcels by Land Bots was no longer allowed<\/a>. This policy was years too late for many but sits in the better late than never category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>February<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Mitch Wagner Article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/software\/social\/second-life-founder-pursues-second-chance\/d\/d-id\/1113670\" target=\"_blank\">Mitch Wagner wrote an article about High Fidelity for Information Week<\/a>. The article was interesting but the comments proved surprising when someone said :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Second Life would have fared better if it had appealed to MMORPG fans, the primary proven market for such activities. Philip Rosedale, you need orcs.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This caused me to suggest that Second Life has plenty of Orcs!<\/p>\n<p>Arsenal fan Ebbe Altberg was <a title=\"Ebbe Altberg CEO\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lindenlab.com\/releases\/ebbe-altberg-joins-linden-lab-as-ceo\" target=\"_blank\">unveiled as the new Linden Lab CEO<\/a>. Rumours that part of the requirement to be Linden Lab CEO these days involves supporting an English football team whose name starts with the letter A were strenuously denied.<\/p>\n<p>Linden Lab provided <a title=\"Tax And Account Requirements\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Commerce\/New-Resource-Tax-amp-Account-Documentation-FAQs\/ba-p\/2486253\" target=\"_blank\">even more information regarding tax and account requirements<\/a>, users continued to scratch their heads.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"LindeX Trading Limit change\" href=\"http:\/\/sl.governormarley.com\/?p=3657\" target=\"_blank\">LindeX trading limits were quietly moved down<\/a>, from $2,500 a month to $2,000 a month for regular LindeX users. Those who required higher limits could still apply for them. Hardly anyone noticed this and the reason has never been explained although I suspect it&#8217;s linked to the tax and account requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Tassi over at Forbes predicted that The Elder Scrolls Online would be <a title=\"Elder Scrolls Online Disaster\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/insertcoin\/2014\/01\/02\/predicting-the-biggest-disaster-of-2014-the-elder-scrolls-online\/\" target=\"_blank\">the biggest video game disaster of 2014<\/a> due to its subscription pricing model. We\u2019re grateful for those who took the time to experiment with these products in their early days, but ultimately we have determined that due to a number of factors, we and our customers will be best served by focusing our efforts on continuing to provide exceptional service and compelling new experiences for the users of our other products.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Versu in particular was mourned. Emily Short announced that <a title=\"Emily Short On Versu\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lindenlab.com\/releases\/linden-lab-refocuses-product-offering\" target=\"_blank\">she would like to keep Versu alive somehow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Welcome Centre by Ciaran Laval, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ciaran_laval\/12726400134\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7334\/12726400134_e3d057bd19.jpg?resize=500%2C238\" alt=\"Welcome Centre\" width=\"500\" height=\"238\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in OpenSim, <a title=\"Greyville Colony\" href=\"http:\/\/sl.governormarley.com\/?p=3710\" target=\"_blank\">The Greyville Colony for writers had caught my eye<\/a>. Nara Malone was extremely happy to show me around.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Project Zipper\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Tools-and-Technology\/Try-Project-Zipper-for-Faster-Viewer-Installation\/ba-p\/2514859\" target=\"_blank\">Linden Lab announced project zipper<\/a>, a project aimed at making the Second Life client download and install process even faster. This left many scratching their heads as the Second Life client didn&#8217;t take long to download and install anyway, however there are suggestions that the longer people have to wait the more likely they are to abandon ship.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"LL Change The Jira\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Tools-and-Technology\/Changes-to-Our-JIRA-Implementation\/ba-p\/2519371\" target=\"_blank\">Linden Lab announced changes to the Jira<\/a> which reversed some of the previous contentious changes. Users would once again be able to see all reported bugs (except security bugs) and they would also be able to comment before an issue was triaged. New Feature requests were also returned to the Jira. Many people cheered, rather loudly.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">March<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SL Go from Onlive <a title=\"SL GO\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Featured-News\/Introducing-SL-Go-from-OnLive\/ba-p\/2528009\" target=\"_blank\">was announced<\/a>. This would allow people to use Second Life on tablets and older hardware. However concerns were raised amongst the user base regarding the per minute pricing model. As noted earlier, Kitely had largely moved away from this model as it had proven unpopular.<\/p>\n<p>Talking of Kitely, their <a title=\"Kitely Market\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kitely.com\/market\" target=\"_blank\">Marketplace<\/a> entered closed beta during March. The intent of this Marketplace was to allow people to sell items via a Marketplace to Hypergrid connected grids or Kitely users.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"LL Say No To Emily\" href=\"https:\/\/emshort.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/08\/versu-outcome\/\" target=\"_blank\">Emily Short announced<\/a> that her attempts to rescue Versu from a dusty shelf had failed :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>So for those who were curious, Linden has now given me a definite no about selling me the codebase and IP.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However like most good stories, this one would have a twist, more on that later.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Virtual World Report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.redcentricplc.com\/virtual-worlds\/\" target=\"_blank\">An interesting Virtual Worlds to real world report appeared<\/a>. The report, from red centric, compared Eve-Online, World Of Warcraft and Second Life to the real world and came up with some very interesting findings :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Between 2006 and 2011, global internet usage doubled in growth \u2013 in the same timeframe, Second Life saw a 4000% increase in users.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a title=\"Hyperggrid Stories Project\" href=\"http:\/\/www.narasnook.com\/2014\/02\/hypergrid-stories-project-launches.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Hypergrid stories project launched<\/a>. This was a project to tell interactive stories in different virtual world grids. Whereas most of the grids were Hypergrid enabled OpenSim worlds, Second Life wasn&#8217;t left out of the project, even though Second Life is not Hypergrid enabled.<\/p>\n<p>Oculus Rift was hot in March and <a title=\"Second Life Oculus Rift Beta\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Tools-and-Technology\/Second-Life-s-Oculus-Rift-Integration-is-Ready-for-Beta-Testers\/ba-p\/2544572\" target=\"_blank\">Linden Lab announced a limited beta test for Oculus Rift integration with Second Life would be taking place<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmation of the slow down of Second Life region losses appeared in the shape and form of growth! <a title=\"Second Life Grid Grows\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sluniverse.com\/php\/vb\/virtual-business\/8523-new-sl-sims-past-week-87.html#post1910200\" target=\"_blank\">The Second Life grid grew by 14 regions during one week in March<\/a>,\u00a015 private regions with 1 Linden Lab region going offline,\u00a0this was the largest week on week growth since June 17th 2012.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Facebook Buy The Rift\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oculus.com\/blog\/oculus-joins-facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook purchased Oculus VR<\/a>, the company behind Oculus Rift. Many people were not happy about this, <a title=\"Markus Persson\" href=\"http:\/\/notch.net\/2014\/03\/virtual-reality-is-going-to-change-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">including Markus Persson of Minecraft fame<\/a> :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I definitely want to be a part of VR, but I will not work with Facebook. Their motives are too unclear and shifting, and they haven\u2019t historically been a stable platform. There\u2019s nothing about their history that makes me trust them, and that makes them seem creepy to me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a title=\"Cultured Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/issuu.com\/culturedmagazine\" target=\"_blank\">Cultured The Magazine<\/a> launched. This wasn&#8217;t just about your name, it was also related to who and which services you give your name to. High Fidelity also received <a title=\"New Scientist Visits High Fidelity\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg22229664.000-second-life-20-virtual-world-recreates-the-real-you.html#.VKGg6CBB\" target=\"_blank\">a visit from Samantha Murphy of New Scientist<\/a>, who was rather impressed :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">As we face each other, the most obvious difference between Second Life and High Fidelity is immediately apparent. Although it is still in early testing, High Fidelity already has the social presence that was lacking in Second Life.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m not 100% in agreement with Samantha there.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">SL Share, a feature that had previously allowed Second Life users to share photos, status updates and check ins was <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" title=\"SL Share Extended\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Featured-News\/SLShare-Now-Supports-Flickr-and-Twitter\/ba-p\/2587318\" target=\"_blank\">extended to Flickr and Twitter<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>SL GO, in light of feedback, <a title=\"SL GO Pricing Change\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Featured-News\/SL-Go-Beta-Updates-Pricing-Expands-to-New-Regions\/ba-p\/2590948\" target=\"_blank\">changed their pricing policy<\/a> from a pay by the minute billing schedule to offering an alternative of a flat fee monthly subscription.<\/p>\n<p>In a bid to help improve documentation regarding the LSL Portal, Strife Onizuka announced the <a title=\"LSL Portal Poetry Project\" href=\"http:\/\/wiki.secondlife.com\/wiki\/LSL_Portal_Poetry_Project\" target=\"_blank\">LSL Portal Poetry project<\/a>. He announced this on April 1st, which set the alarm bells ringing but this was a genuine project. The idea was to bring Haiku to LSL documentation.<\/p>\n<p>Linden Lab encouraged content creators to assist customers to purchase <a title=\"Standard Clothing\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Commerce\/Help-Customers-Buy-Clothing-that-Fits-their-Avatars\/ba-p\/2613864\" target=\"_blank\">Mesh clothing that fits their avatar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In order to make this easier for shoppers, we have worked with Second Life content creators to define a way to clearly communicate this to customers. Linden Lab and Jo Yardley <a title=\"Promote Second Life\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Featured-News\/Share-Your-Favorite-Second-Life-Locations-with-The-Guardian\/ba-p\/2747354\" target=\"_blank\">encouraged people to submit Second Life cities<\/a> to the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Talking of Jo Yardley, The Drax Files : World Makers episode 2 1920&#8217;s Berlin <a title=\"Drax Wins An Award\" href=\"http:\/\/sl.governormarley.com\/?p=4007\" target=\"_blank\">received an award for Best Machinima<\/a> at the New Media Festival.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EkE_F2nEf4g\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Kiely announced that the would be <a title=\"Kitely Remove Metered Worlds\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kitely.com\/virtual-world-news\/2014\/06\/11\/removing-metered-worlds-and-introducing-premium-worlds\/\" target=\"_blank\">removing metered worlds and introducing Premium Worlds<\/a> as they continued to tweak their pricing model.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Linden Lab were happily announcing that <a title=\"Project Shining Complete\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Featured-News\/Project-Shining-is-now-complete\/ba-p\/2750380\" target=\"_blank\">Project Shining was complete<\/a> :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>So if you happen to notice quicker avatar renderings, faster scene loading, seamless region crossing, or just better overall router stability, these are all objectives of Project Shining.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There was a bit of a hoo-ha regarding a competition for SL11B, it required Second Life residents to enter via Facebook and as many of us know, Facebook is not exactly Second Life friendly. However Gray Of The Lab from San Francisco (AKA Pete Linden) explained :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>We realize that a number of Second Life users have reservations about using Facebook and other platforms. In this case, we chose to run the contest through our Facebook page simply because we have a tool on our page that facilitates running a contest with all of the legal stuff (technical term) we need in place to run something like this, and we thought it would be of interest to the more than 366,000 followers of the official Second Life page.
