However in another way of making the point that talking is good, a discussion in the comments of the first Drax Files Radio Show episode related around other Second Life related podcasts and thanks to links from Crap Mariner of 100 words stories, I can see that there were many other podcasts in the past.

An example is the now defunct SecondCast, which was presented mainly by Johnny Ming and Torrid Midnight of Torridwear. However other people would also host the show, including Cristiano Midnight of SLUniverse and Snapzilla, Lordfly Digeridoo and Walker Spaight of 3pointD.com and the Second Life Herald, is this the same Walker who became a Linden as conversation manager? Thanks to the wayback machine we can find descriptions of the sort of content the show covered. Send your pants entries to Johnny Ming in-world (make sure they are transferrable).

Here we see an example of how the Lindens would engage with broadcasters, over the years the Lindens did engage with other broadcasters, they were interviewed on the Paisley Beebe chat show, for example.

July 16th 2006 – Johnny and the Secondcasters interview Randy Moss of the American Cancer Society and Second Life resident Jade Lily. Torrid describes her team’s fundraising strategies and Johnny ends the show explaining the source of the male Secondcasters tennis elbow. Don’t miss the Relay for Life this upcoming weekend!!

This makes one feel old, relay for life was only in its second year back then! There were many other podcasts, some of which are listed on the wiki.

In those old shows we see some familiar names, Salome Strangelove, Grace McDunnough, Crap Mariner, Bettina Tizzy, Kitty O’Toole, Phaylen Fairchild and Mitch Wagner are the ones that stand out to me, I’m sure some of you will recognise a lot of the other names.

I also see a show that seems to have stopped being recorded called Off The Shelf, by Simeon Beresford and Kghia Gherardi. The blurb for the show sounds interesting to me and downloads do look like they are still available:

“Off the Shelf is a radio/podcast show hosted by Kghia Gherardi and Simeon Beresford. The show focuses on interviews with authors, poets, publishers, editors, librarians, literary venue hosts, and other bookish people, both within Second Life and outside. Off the Shelf is produced by Kghia Gherardi, Simeon Beresford and Radio Riel. It can be heard on Radio Riel and the podcasts can be downloaded from this site and from iTunes.”

When it comes to inworld chat shows, I’ve mentioned the now defunct Paisley Beebe show, I’ve also talked before about GayWorld TV’s InsyX show. Then there are also shows such as Designing Worlds by Saffia Widdershins and Elrik Merlin. On top of this, treet.tv itself has a shed load of shows.

However these shows do not get much promotion from the Second Life website. One may argue that they shouldn’t anyway, as they are independent productions, but as the content goes beyond Second Life’s walls, it may be useful if Linden Lab highlighted them. There would of course be concerns regarding the kind of content discussed, but usually you can add a disclaimer about this and also a disclaimer to say that Linden Lab are not involved in their production. The thing is, if people outside of Second Life find out about these podcasts and shows, they may be tempted to try Second Life too, or bring their production to Second Life.

The problem of course for many Second Life residents is that they are too busy inside Second Life to find the time to enjoy these shows, that is admittedly a quandry, but many of these shows paint a very good picture of various use cases for Second Life, use cases that the mainstream media all too often ignore because it’s not scandalous enough for them to take note.

As I said in my previous post, The Drax Files Radio hour isn’t the first of its kind, the popular MetaReality Podcast has been around for a while, Drax was part of that sometimes too!
