{"id":2597,"date":"2013-01-09T19:00:05","date_gmt":"2013-01-09T19:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sl.governormarley.com\/?p=2597"},"modified":"2013-01-09T20:20:27","modified_gmt":"2013-01-09T20:20:27","slug":"lag-storm-bernard-wreaks-havok","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sl.governormarley.com\/?p=2597","title":{"rendered":"Lag Storm Bernard Wreaks Havok!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<em>We&#8217;re starting off the new year with a bang<\/em>&#8221; <a title=\"Maestro In The Forum\" href=\"http:\/\/community.secondlife.com\/t5\/Second-Life-Server\/Deploys-for-the-week-of-2013-01-07\/td-p\/1810179\" target=\"_blank\">announced Maestro Linden<\/a> and that certainly seems to have been the case as the unexpected <strong><em>Lag Storm Bernard<\/em><\/strong> (<a title=\"Lag Storm Bernard\" href=\"https:\/\/modemworld.wordpress.com\/2013\/01\/08\/sl-project-news-week-1-2-server-deployments-and-network-issues\/#comments\" target=\"_blank\">named by Loki Eliot<\/a>) left many a sim creaking in its wake. There was <a title=\"Grid Status Reports\" href=\"http:\/\/status.secondlifegrid.net\/2013\/01\/09\/post1857\/\" target=\"_blank\">many a warning<\/a> to: <em>Please refrain from rezzing no copy objects, making inworld L$ transactions and remember to save all builds<\/em> as the storm caused the Linden firefighters to embark upon a series of rolling restarts to combat the worst case scenarios that were playing out.<\/p>\n<p>Reports were coming in of performance issues, packet loss, problems rezzing, requests for a rollback, and in some cases, outright grumpiness as people, probably without hats and waterproofs, inspected the trail of chaos.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the Lindens were on the case and despite the difficult circumstances, they managed to complete their maintenance to avoid long lasting damage, I managed to sleep and work through the whole thing without so much as a complaint from my chief Elf, maybe we were in the eye of the storm.<\/p>\n<p>These sort of storms are often difficult to predict and don&#8217;t show up on satellite photos, they usually take everyone by surprise, other than those who expect the worst in the best of times but I discovered the difficulty of predicting such storms when I tried to contact the Linden Lab meteorological office about what precautions they take to try and limit damage in these circumstances:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We haven&#8217;t got a meteorological office, I think you&#8217;ve got the wrong number<\/em>&#8221; I was informed. Hmmmm.<\/p>\n<p>So my best suggestion is to point you to the Second Life Grid Status Reports page, where you can keep an eye on what&#8217;s happening when Second Life seems to be getting very laggy or you&#8217;re having general performance issues in general: <a title=\"Second Life Grid Status\" href=\"http:\/\/status.secondlifegrid.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/status.secondlifegrid.net\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of these days there will be a link to the Second Life Grid Status Reports Page from within the forums, or at the very least a sticky in the server forum linking to it!
