What is Relay For Life of Second Life?<\/p>\n

Relay For Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society and has been active, and continually growing\u00a0 in Second Life for 6 years.\u00a0 In 2005, the first Relay For Life of Second Life (RFL of SL) was attended by a few hundred avatars and raised almost $5,000 US dollars for the American Cancer Society.\u00a0 In 2009 the Relay For Life of Second Life raised over $250,000.00 US dollars and was attended by thousands of avatars.\u00a0 In 2010 the Relay For Life of Second Life raised over $220,000.\u00a0 We ran right past the $1,000,000 mark during our 2011 campaign!<\/p>\n

Relay Weekend\u00a0 is a fun-filled, overnight event that unites SL individuals throughout the world to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer.<\/p>\n

Relay for Life of Second Life<\/a>

Following is a summary of the activities and events you’ll find at Relay For Life Weekend 2011.\u00a0 We’re so excited to fill you in on the new and returning fun things to do this year.<\/p>\n

First, let’s talk about the luminaries.\u00a0 As you walk the track you’ll notice luminaries line the sides.\u00a0 These are your opportunities to pay tribute to a lost loved one.. or to thank a person who inspires and encourages you.\u00a0 Donating lindens to a luminary gives you the chance to mention a special someone in hover text over the bag and will light and change color based on the linden amount paid to it.\u00a0 Following is a list of the 2011 Luminary color and linden levels.<\/p>\n

100 – 2499L – Blue
\n2500 – 4999L – Green
\n5000 – 7499L –\u00a0 Pink
\n7500 – 9999L –\u00a0 Orange
\n10000L or more – Purple + Fireworks<\/p>\n

Next , we’ll take a look at the Themed Laps and the five special ceremonies.<\/p>\n

————-THE RELAY TRACK———-<\/strong><\/p>\n

The themes are brought to the track to be fun and entertaining, not required, but it’s always fun to see all the variety on the track.\u00a0 Embedded here is a list of this year’s themes and we hope you enjoy getting those outfits ready!<\/p>\n

Themed Laps<\/a><\/p>\n

Around the track you’ll see a constant amazing display of some of SL’s greatest talent.\u00a0 The 2011 Relay For Life Team campsites.\u00a0 They have all come together to build their own display at the side of the track and welcome you to stop in and visit.\u00a0 They’ve worked hard all season and are thrilled that you’re here.<\/p>\n

Also alongside the track are fabulous builds constructed for our enjoyment by some of SL’s top builders.\u00a0 It is with honor we thank the following builders for the generous donation of their talent and precious time for us all to enjoy.\u00a0 Also listed is the name of the region that you can view their contribution to this year’s Relay For Life track.<\/p>\n

—————- THE CEREMONIES—————–<\/strong><\/p>\n

JULY 16TH 2011:<\/p>\n

Opening Ceremony – 10 am – The fun-filled weekend begins!<\/p>\n

CELEBRATE – 11 am – The first lap of Relay weekend begins with the celebrate ceremony.\u00a0 A Survivor\/Caregiver honor walk.\u00a0 Please line the track and celebrate our heroes.<\/p>\n

REMEMBER – 9pm – the Luminaria Ceremony –\u00a0 a solumn reflection with readings and inspirational music; sims are darkened for in remembrance of those and their loved ones who have lost their battles to cancer or are still battling it; all are invited to participate.\u00a0 Please walk the track in silence.<\/p>\n

JULY 17TH 2011:<\/p>\n

FIGHT BACK -6am-\u00a0 Pick up your specially made RFL HOPE Cape and Fight Back Flags – available at the Relay Stations,\u00a0 and join us as we make our fight back pledges to save a life this year -your own, a friends, a family member, or someone you don’t even know yet.\u00a0 Together we all can FIGHT BACK against cancer.<\/p>\n

Closing Ceremony – 10 am – Come to close out our amazing weekend with this closing tribute to what we’ve accomplished and how we will, as ONE big Relay For Life of Secondlife team, continue to Fight Back and keep our Hope alive.<\/p>\n

As you land on the Event Day sims this year, you will see a Welcome Center staffed by volunteer greeters who are there to direct traffic, answer questions and distribute the 2011 Relay For Life Visitors Guide.<\/p>\n
