The bonus here being that Qie Niangao has made a display that not only captures that magic, it also allows you to simulate riding a train inworld as well as promoting the Virtual Railway Consortium and Second Life Rail Road (SLRR).<\/p>\n<p>The display starts with\u00a0a simulation of a toy train which you ride.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Outside Display by Ciaran Laval, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/23556228@N08\/5853760312\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5154\/5853760312_b56a012d76.jpg?resize=500%2C314\" alt=\"Outside Display\" width=\"500\" height=\"314\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then before you know it you&#8217;re inside a train carriage, with sound and shaking.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Inside Train  by Ciaran Laval, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/23556228@N08\/5853760020\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5196\/5853760020_da021f253c.jpg?resize=500%2C298\" alt=\"Inside Train \" width=\"500\" height=\"298\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I caught up with Qie Niangao to ask him more about the display, the Virtual Railway Consortium and the SLRR.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Qie Niangao: &#8220;<em>So, it&#8217;s for VRC, and tries to show the &#8220;magic&#8221; people find in trains, rail travel, etc.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a little odd in that entry to it is solely by sitting on a little toy train in the front.\u00a0 So that&#8217;s why the rest of the exhibit is so blank from the outside<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Inside Train Advert by Ciaran Laval, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/23556228@N08\/5853206913\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5317\/5853206913_f103a155b4.jpg?resize=500%2C298\" alt=\"Inside Train Advert\" width=\"500\" height=\"298\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Qie Niangao: &#8220;<em>Once seated, there&#8217;s a little chat script that it goes through, trying to drop a few hints about &#8220;magic&#8221; times people may have had in their history experiencing trains&#8230; in the course of that, it drops the visitor into a &#8220;transit simulation&#8221; that I got from Apollosmile Resident (and reworked some to remove megaprims, reduce scripts, etc), so then you &#8220;ride&#8221; that simulator for a while, and come out onto a station platform, where there&#8217;s more information about VRC, it&#8217;s mission, a freebie train that runs on the SLRR, etc<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Outside Train by Ciaran Laval, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/23556228@N08\/5853759484\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5065\/5853759484_9429ab566d.jpg?resize=500%2C229\" alt=\"Outside Train\" width=\"500\" height=\"229\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Qie Niangao: &#8220;<em>One of the things there (if they don&#8217;t force me to remove it &#8212; it&#8217;s only three scripts, and two of them are trivial, but it looks scary as hell) is a real-time updated interactive map of traffic on the SLRR. One thing that&#8217;s interesting, perhaps, is that both that map and Apollosmile&#8217;s train simulator won the Sunday show-and-tell that Barney Boomslang and flo Kerensky run, in Avaria,\u00a0so, in a way, we owe Barney &amp; flo for the exhibit.\u00a0 (and I like to plug that event whenever I can)<\/em>.&#8221;ddd<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"SLRR Map by Ciaran Laval, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/23556228@N08\/5853758636\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2466\/5853758636_65a18d3a4f.jpg?resize=500%2C475\" alt=\"SLRR Map\" width=\"500\" height=\"475\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then I asked Qie about how much involvement there had been between Qie and SLRR for this exhibit:<\/p>\n<p>Qie Niangao: &#8220;<em>You mean LDPW?\u00a0 (the Moles&#8230; and Michael, who maintain the SLRR)&#8230; well&#8230; nothing for the exhibit.\u00a0 For that traffic map, another VRC officer identified that my little traffic probes seemed to be &#8220;tripping&#8221; the SLRR switches (this was at the very beginning, like two months ago or more)&#8230;. and we chatted with Sylvan Mole about what was going on&#8230; then it was easy to just change the waypoints that the probes used, to avoid tripping the switches<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Virtual Railway Consortium Sign by Ciaran Laval, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/23556228@N08\/5853759162\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5063\/5853759162_fc0940a9aa.jpg?resize=386%2C500\" alt=\"Virtual Railway Consortium Sign\" width=\"386\" height=\"500\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Qie Niangao: &#8220;<em>So&#8230; VRC (and others who use the SLRR) are very appreciative of the close cooperation we get from the Moles and Michael&#8230; for working out specs for the SLRR system, etc.\u00a0 (It&#8217;s just that this particular exhibit doesn&#8217;t emphasize anything that really needed that cooperation.)<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Virtual Railway Consortium Information by Ciaran Laval, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/23556228@N08\/5853759078\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5304\/5853759078_420e9d9111.jpg?resize=500%2C493\" alt=\"Virtual Railway Consortium Information\" width=\"500\" height=\"493\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then I asked Qie whether Moundsa Mayo had been involved, I still have a notecard from Moundsa from years ago about SLRR and was trying to find out what he&#8217;s doing these days:<\/p>\n<p>Qie Niangao: &#8220;<em>He&#8217;s the president of VRC.\u00a0 He&#8217;s pretty busy with RL (paying) projects these days, so he wasn&#8217;t actively involved in this exhibit, no.\u00a0 We chatted among the officers whether to do the SL Birthday bash this year or not, and who could take it on, so I volunteered to do it.
