Virtually Speaking Science To Talk To Virgin Galactic With A Virtual Studio Audience In Second Life

Virtually Speaking Science

I’ve talked about Virtually Speaking Science before, but I’m going to talk about it again. Virtually Speaking Science is described as :

Informal conversations hosted by science writers Alan Boyle, Jennifer Ouellette, Kelly Hills and Tom Levenson, who, with their guests, explore the often-volatile landscape of science, politics and policy, the history and economics of science, science deniers and its relationship to democracy, and the role of women in the sciences. Produced by Sherry Reson. Hosted in Second Life by the Exploratorium.

The upcoming showm scheduled for 8pm ET today (I do wish they’d use SLT) features NBC News’ digital science editor, Alan Boyle, speaking to Virgin Galactic’s vice president for special projects, Will Pomerantz, regarding the future of private sector spaceflight. This of course comes in the wake of the tragic accident involving SpaceShipTwo five months ago.

The show can be watched as part of a live virtual world audience in Second Life at The Exploratorium.

Enjoy Weird Science At The Exploratorium’s Second Life Auditorium

Science Exploratorium

I’ve mentioned before that there’s a lack of Science Fiction in Second Life. There’s also a lack of Science Fact. However both genres do exist in Second Life, just not to the degree I’d have expected.

When it comes to real science, as I’ve mentioned before, The Exploratorium is a good place to go. The Exploratorium is also the home of the podcast Virtually Speaking Science. The latest edition is going to be all about humour : Science + Humor = A Winning Formula for Laughing and Thinking. The show will be hosted by Alan Boyle of NBC News and will feature Marc Abrahams of Improbable Research reviewing some of weirdest tales of Science from 2014 and furthermore, you can watch the show live in Second Life :

Marc Abrahams will review the past year’s weirdest scientific tales with NBC News’ Alan Boyle during Wednesday’s installment of “Virtually Speaking Science,” an hourlong talk show airing at 8 p.m. ET via BlogTalkRadio. You can also watch the show as part of a live virtual audience in the Exploratorium’s Second Life auditorium

By Wednesday they mean today, unless you live in a timezone whereby 8pm ET is tomorrow of course, which would be the very early hours of the morning in Europe alas. I also think Alan Boyle needs to embrace SLT as a timezone to assist us all!

Science Talk And Exhibits At Exploratorium In Second Life

Exploratorium in Second Life

One would think that in a virtual world such as Second Life where the laws of physics can be defied, that science and science fiction would be portrayed widely. However that generally doesn’t seem to be the case. However I did stumble across Exploratorium whereby science is not only dipslayed, it’s also discussed in the shape and form of  the Virtually Speaking Science podcast.

The blurb for the latest edition of the podcast reads :

Ten years after the $10 million Ansari XPRIZE opened up the age of private-sector spaceflight, two XPRIZE pioneers reflect on the past decade and look ahead to the future of innovation prizes. Tune in to hear from Robert Weiss, a Hollywood producer (“The Blues Brothers,” “The Naked Gun”) who is vice chairman and president of X Prize; and energy and space expert, Gregg Maryniak, who helped get the Ansari XPRIZE off the ground.

View Across Science Sim

This isn’t a new show or sim, they have both been running for quite some time but like many things in Second Life you don’t actually realise they are there until you stumble across them. I’m not blaming anyone for this, Second Life remains a vast space with lots of different events going on and it’s impossible to really keep up with all the ins and outs.
