Marketplace Categories Still Open For Discussion

Having mentioned in a recent post about Linden Lab’s lack of discussion, I’m now going to embark on a couple of posts about Linden Lab inviting discussion and communicating! We’ll start with Marketplace categories.

On December 20th, CommerceTeam Linden updated a post on the official forum:

To make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for when shopping the Marketplace, we have updated the proposed new categories based upon your feedback. But it doesn’t end there! You have until January 10, 2013 to review and share any additional comments you may have.

Here are the new categories we have already added to the Marketplace. Enjoy!

 Under Celebrations/Holidays/Christmas

  • Added “Women’s Seasonal Apparel”
  • Added “Men’s Seasonal Apparel”
  • Added “Christmas Trees & Ornaments”
  • Added “Christmas Lights”

Under Celebrations/Wedding

  • Added “Wedding Dresses”
  • Added “Wedding Tuxedos”
  • Added “Bridesmaid Dresses”
  • Added “Wedding Decorations”
  • Added “Wedding Rings”

We look forward to seeing your thoughts and comments on any other categories!

Spreading The Linden Dollar Love

Ok Linden Lab have been, for one reason or another, spreading out the Linden Dollar love. In one case it’s for competition winners and in the other case, it’s for billing problems.

The competition winners were for the marketplace contest to suggest new categories for skins, the blog post has been updated with a comment with the information on the new categories and the winners who each receive 2,899 Linden Dollars, which is the price of a month long frontpage listing enhancement on the marketplace. The winners, in no particular order are:

  • Emma Krokus
  • kilene kondor
  • SayaNicole Cuttita
  • Voshie Paine
  • Yuukie Onmura

I’ve no idea what categories they suggested but congratulations to them!

LL Launch Marketplace Category Contest

So LL have announced a competition to give feedback on the new proposed Marketplace categories, via a survey  in order to win the prize of 2,489  Linden dollars you will need to get creative with suggestions for the female skins sub-categories. There will be five winners and the winning prize can pay for a month long front page Marketplace enhancement.

There are rules and regulations to be aware of, as there should be with any reputable contest! I think the thing to appreciate here is that the Marketplace team are responding, this isn’t how I’d like to see them respond to issues and as Inara Pey points out in her blog post on a recent announcement that meetings with merchants aren’t on the horizon, the marketplace team aren’t exactly winning friends and influencing people with their communications strategy.

However the competition is here for those who want to have a say about the proposed categories and a competition adds a bit of fun to the process as well as bringing some engagement to interested parties.

LL Encourage People To Switch To Direct Delivery

Some of you, like me, will be currently finding emails arriving encouraging you to switch your Second Life Marketplace items from the outdated (in their words) Magic Box and onto the wonderful world of Direct Delivery. Merchants are encouraged to switch to Direct Delivery as soon as possible, although if you’re selling items for which you don’t have copy permissions, you’re pretty snookered as Direct Delivery doesn’t support items for which the merchant has no copy permissions.

Direct Delivery has pro’s and cons for merchants. Linden Lab inform us it’s faster and more reliable in terms of delivery and I don’t dispute that. However people have experienced problems with Direct Delivery, such as not being able to drag their items into the merchant outbox.

I’ve migrated items to direct delivery and didn’t really experience any problems, however other merchants have had issues, so be wary, maybe try one or two items before going for a big bulk change.

Marketplace Wounds Can Be Healed But Surgery May Need To Be Drastic

I’ve been playing the latest World Of Warcraft expansion, Mists Of Pandaria, recently. The starting zone introduces you to the wise Master Shang, who offers wisdom and tells you that something is wrong with the world, he is seeking aid on how to fix things. Does this sound familiar? The solution in the end is rather drastic, very risky and takes a lot of healing.

Which brings us to The Marketplace. I’m not going to go into all the current woes, Inara Pey’s blog post and a forum thread or two, will do that for you. Suffice to say there are many unhappy bunnies, merchants and customers.

Someimes you need to stop digging. The Marketplace is suffering all sorts of woes, I’m sure people at Linden Lab and on The Marketplace team are tearing their hair out and beavering away trying to come up with a fix, but it may be time to think again and look at another big overhaul.

I’m sure there will be groans at such a prospect, but sometimes you need to rip it up and start again.
