Get Your Free Sananok Avatar and Mysterious Egg

Vending Machine

There’s something mysterious going on with Linden Lab and this year’s SL14B celebrations, something very mysterious indeed, which we can see by way of a Linden Lab blog post :  Second Life is Turning 14 !

Well you may think there’s nothing mysterious about Second Life turning 14, but pay attention, there’s something mysterious about this year’s gift of a free Sananok avatar and a mysterious egg.

Sananok Avatar and egg

The first mysterious thing is that even Linden Lab are sure of what a Sananok is :

We’re not entirely sure what a Sananok is, but the Moles assure us they are friendly creatures that tend to keep to themselves and need a good home. Each Sananok avatar comes with a mysterious egg, which is in fact so mysterious, not even the Moles know what it will hatch into.

Furthermore, The Moles aren’t quite sure what that egg will hatch into.

Sansar, Sustainability and Suspicion

A couple of unrelated articles about virtual worlds have caught my attention. One is by Cecilia D’Anastasio for Kotaku : Hands-On With Sansar, The New Second Life.

The second is regarding a greener future by Julia Rosen for Nature, International weekly journal of science : Sustainability: A greener culture.

Whereas the articles are unrelated, I’m going to link them because the latter article covers a subject that Sansar could help with.

First Cecilia D’Anastasio’s article for Kotaku, this as the headline suggests, takes a hands on look at Linden Lab’s Sansar and has some very positive commentary about the platform :

my favorite, an Egyptian tomb. In real-life, this tomb is only accessible with permission from Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities. The level of detail a Lidar-scanned image of it betrayed in Sansar was astounding.

Also impressive were Gholston’s facial movements as we toured around the world. Sansar is developing a new facial recognition software that contorts avatars’ mouths into shapes it knows people’s faces make when they pronounce certain sounds. It’s like vocaloid software, but it blends into the whole Sansar caprice of “immersion,” an empty buzzword that took on sudden meaning inside Sansar today.

This exemplifies how immersive Sansar and other Virtual World / Virtual Reality ventures will get. Whether this makes them more popular remains to be seen because beyond superb technology you will also need communities.

SL14B – The Beat and The Exhibits Go On

Taxi For Me

Second Life’s 14th Birthday celebrations continue at a rapid pace with such a packed agenda that I need transport to get around.

Armed with the new 5.0.7.52912 release of the Firestorm Viewer, (which Inara Pey reviews so very well here), I’ve been taking in the many sights and sounds.

Kardargo Adamczyk DJ

Now you may have an impression that SL14B is all about partying, well there is a lot of partying with live music and DJ’s entertaining the crowds.

However there’s a lot more to it than that. Discussions, art, education, community exhibits and much more will also occupy your time and eyes.

Take A Step Back In Time To Explore Second Life’s Origins

Da Boom

Whilst we get ready to celebrate Second Life’s 14th birthday, with events starting this weekend, the Second Life Destination Guide gives us a chance to take a step back in time via the Second Life Origins section.

This gives us an opportunity to view Second Life as it once was, with a visit to areas such as Da Boom, Second Life’s very first region.

You may want to visit Boardman where zoning guidelines were introduced all the way back in January 2003. I’ve never been sure why these sort of areas weren’t more popular.

Boardman Zoned Overview

Boardman had/has some zoning rules and the welcome notecards around provide us with some information regarding the project :

Welcome to Boardman! Boardman is a controlled building community. A small suburban area, Boardman is the perfect place to build your home if you’re looking for a nice, quiet region without the stores and looming towers you might find building elsewhere.

Here are some helpful guidelines to help maintain Boardman:

You can own as much land as you want, but your build in Boardman MUST be a conventional residence that might be seen in a suburb. This means that stores, dance clubs, sheep farms, and any other non-house builds are not permitted within Boardman.

Builders are no longer limited to using the Mini-House-in-a-Box. But it’s available at the supply stores located around the perimeter of this region.

Now if you’re wondering what sort of zoning rules applied, read on.
