Scripting Resources Are A Job Pretty Well Done

I haven’t been that interested in the US election, not being an American or having the right to vote in the election helps a bit there. The world economies being in a mess no matter who wins, helps there too but I did want Barack Obama to win largely because it’s a slap in the face for The Wonga party in government in the UK who would have seized upon a Mitt Romney win to justify their heinous mess of a job they’re doing in Government. However it’s not like Labour offer anything much better, just a little bit in the right direction but we’re not exactly spoilt for choice.

However, when Linden Lab are feeling down about the views people post to their employees, which is allegedly part of the reasoning behind the mistaken policy of hiding Jira’s, they should be grateful that they don’t have Donald Trump as a disgruntled customer because his twitter meltdown was truly spectacular, I mean really really spectacular. That’s some funny stuff.

However, let’s move on to an area where Linden Lab are very good, scripting resources. This doesn’t mean scripting in Second Life is easy, but let’s give credit to the amount of resources available.

Oskar Wild

Well I’ve been talking about books, and I’ve been talking about Oskar’s departure and … well I just couldn’t resist! The news of Oskar’s departure has spread, a forum post or two on the official forums. The thread over at SLUniverse is still active, with Oskar receiving a whopping 113 hugs from well wishers so far. Daniel Voyager was one of the first, probably the first, to blog about Oskar’s departure. There has been another post from Prok, who was one of the first to blog about the departure rumours.

Also amongst the first to blog on the rumours was Inara Pey, who had the rumblings on page 2 of her week 44/4 Server and viewer news. Inara has blogged again on the subject, whereas JeuxOnline has an article entitled Linden Lab se sépare d’Oskar Linden. People are a bit miffed, although I wouldn’t imagine, anywhere near as miffed as Oskar. The thing is with Oskar, is that despite his faults (and he’s only human, he has faults), he communicated in an excellent fashion, whether you liked what he said was a different issue, but he spoke to people and people like that. People feel engaged when there’s communication, which is why Linden Lab’s lack of communication is so frustrating, but I’ll come to that later.

Oskar isn’t the first popular Linden to leave the lab and unfortunately, he won’t be the last. Prospero Linden used to be the server rollout guy, he was popular although of course being the server guy, you will have critics, he also communicated very well, I hope there isn’t a theme here! There have been many other Lindens who have gone whom many of us miss for differing reasons, new ones will arrive and be well liked …. I hope! Whereas others have come and gone, or are still working for Linden Lab, who never get the credit they deserve.

Open University Events In Second Life For November

Tori Landau (in Second Life) of the Open University has granted me permission to post information about three events planned for The Open University at Deep Think within Second Life this month. These events are most likely to be aimed at educators or those working within education. I am not a representative of The Open University so I can’t answer any questions about these events.

First things first, the sim is general rated, so if you are going to visit then please mind your P’s and Q’s and dress appropriately.

Wed 7th – Rooftop Bop at 2pm slt / 10pm GMT

No decor theme this month, however, there is a prize of $100L for best in casual wear. So chill, relax and have a laugh listening to DJ Anjoux Herbit spinning tunes and taking requests for two hours. Location is the rooftop of the communal building at Deep Think West

LL Encourage People To Switch To Direct Delivery

Some of you, like me, will be currently finding emails arriving encouraging you to switch your Second Life Marketplace items from the outdated (in their words) Magic Box and onto the wonderful world of Direct Delivery. Merchants are encouraged to switch to Direct Delivery as soon as possible, although if you’re selling items for which you don’t have copy permissions, you’re pretty snookered as Direct Delivery doesn’t support items for which the merchant has no copy permissions.

Direct Delivery has pro’s and cons for merchants. Linden Lab inform us it’s faster and more reliable in terms of delivery and I don’t dispute that. However people have experienced problems with Direct Delivery, such as not being able to drag their items into the merchant outbox.

I’ve migrated items to direct delivery and didn’t really experience any problems, however other merchants have had issues, so be wary, maybe try one or two items before going for a big bulk change.

Books And Libraries

So my ususal Monday trick of listening to Digital Human on BBC Radio 4 for blog inspiration failed this week because they were talking about Cyborgs, transhumanism and whether we are all subsconsciously becoming Cyborgs and try as I did, I couldn’t find an angle to get to Second Life from that material, a jolly good listen however.

So I decided, after urgings, to investigate e-books. This was a tale of woe, first of all I tried to get an e-book from Waterstones. However to read e-books on the PC I needed to download Adobe Digital Editions, this was a breeze and now I was cooking on gas, all I needed to do was remember my Adobe password and I could install my soon to be purchased e-book on different mediums, if I didn’t register, I’d only be able to read it on my PC. At this point things went tits up, I couldn’t remember my password. Aha, there’s a password reset request and sure enough, I was informed an email was on its way. Several hours later and I’m still waiting.

So instead I went to Amazon, installed their Kindle for PC reader, realised I’d forgotten my Amazon password… oh heck but this time a password reset request actually worked. The only annoying thing left was having to pay VAT on my e-book, in the UK we don’t pay VAT on physical books but an e-book is considered an electronic service, not a book, even though it is a book, I’ll save that rant for another day, although Remember Remember, the fifth of November is an ideal day for a rant about The Government! The real moral of this story is to remember your passwords.

Then I read a little and decided to quickly take a look at the Second Life storytelling scene and popped to the Seanchai Library.
