AltspaceVR Appear To Be In The Right Place At The Right Time For Microsoft’s Purchase

AltspaceVR yesterday announced they would be joining Microsoft in a deal that looks to suit both parties. This is quite a turnaround in fortune for AltspaceVR, which bid the world a very sad goodbye on July 28th before announcing on August 15th that AltspaceVR is Back!

The new deal with Microsoft looks good for AltspaceVR :

AltspaceVR will stay AltspaceVR. Microsoft is most interested in preserving the current community that uses AltspaceVR to connect and interact with new and old friends. These first few months will focus on fostering our community and making sure AltspaceVR remains a friendly, welcoming and vibrant place to hang out in virtual reality.

Sometimes when a company gets purchased it gets incorporated in another company and we never really hear of it again. This isn’t the case with this deal and that’s good news.

I do not know why Microsoft have purchased AltspaceVR. but it’s fun to speculate and with my speculation hat on it looks to me as if AltspaceVR was in the right place at the right time to take advantages of developments in Software and Hardware that Microsoft are heavily involved with.

First United Church SL The Book

First UCC SL

Just over two years ago I went to visit The First United Church of Christ in Second Life where I spoke to Reverend Becca Kellstrom and Reverend Jerome Newstart, known as Rev. Dr. Jerold Garber outside of Second Life.

In an interview that I published in two parts they explained to me how the church worked in Second Life and some of their experiences within the virtual world.

Rev. Dr. Jerold Garber has now published a book of his own, Ministry to the Avatars: Building a Real Church in a Virtual World.  The book is published by Archway Publishing From Simon & Schuster. I haven’t read the book, so this post is not going to contain a review.

The blurb for the book gives some insight into the content :

In Ministry to the Avatars: Building a Real Church in a Virtual World, author and reverend Dr. Jerold A. Garber shares the transcendent story of First United Church of Christ Second Life—a virtual church designed and built in Second Life,

An Image Should Be Here

I am a little late posting this but there’s still time to enjoy cake in Second Life because today is Cake Against Cancer day, courtesy of Prim Perfect and Cheertopia and all for a very good cause.

The event is part of a bigger event, the biggest coffee morning in the world, organised by the UK Charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Cakes Are Not a Lie
Today’s event will start at 1pm SLT at Prim Perfect HQ, where DJ Elrik Merlin will be spinning the tunes until 3pm and then the event moves to Cheertopia, home of the Second Life Cheerleaders who will be holding a bake sale for the cause.

Prim Perfect have been holding Macmillan Coffee Mornings in aid of this cause since 2013 and have raised over £540.00 (over US$720) through the sale of virtual cake.

Linden Lab Issue Warning About Account Security and Inform Users About Potential Viewer Install Warnings

Linden Lab have blogged about a couple of important issues that could impact your enjoyment of Second Life. One is about account security, which is very important and the other is about potential warnings when you try to install Second Life, which contains helpful knowledge.

The account security blog post; An Important Reminder About Account Security, informs us :

It has come to our attention that some Residents are sending messages – which may appear as popup windows in some viewers – informing other Residents that their accounts have been compromised and encouraging them to contact Support, using a phone number that is not associated with Linden Lab.

These messages are phishing attempts to gain access to your Second Life account. Neither Linden Lab, nor Second Life Customer Support, would attempt to contact you in this manner.

Please make sure you are aware of this issue, the blog post from Linden Lab contains links to support, so it’s well worth taking a look at the post.
