dio Definitely Has Potential

Dio6

I must confess that the blurb about dio hadn’t gripped me at all, it looked like another social network, with some funky features but we’ve seen it all before. Versu is the forthcoming Linden Lab project I’ve been looking forward to, that’s the interactive fiction, that’s the creative space that appeals most to me.

However, after using dio, I’ve changed my mind. There’s a lot of potential here and it’s a very diverse place. There are also quite a few Second Life and virtual world users setting up home there already, sneaky bunch aren’t we.

You’ve been Left On Your Own, Like A Rainbow In The Dark

Linden Lab have unleashed another new product, this time dio, where you may be able to ride the tiger, you can see his stripes but you know he’s clean. dio has been on the horizon for a while, but now it seems to be cooking on gas and you can see some good commentary on Inara Pey’s blog post and Hamlet Au’s blog post, alternatively you can stick with me for cheesy 80’s rock references, look, someone was going to do it, I’m just taking one for the team and sparing other bloggers the pain of the cheesy references!

There’s also a very hand press release from Linden Lab, which can be read here. I’m still awaiting a reply from Peter Gray from an email from years ago now that I think about it, but one day, you never know. Anyway, what is dio I hear you ask, and no don’t go all 80’s rock again, well not just yet! Where was I? Oh yes, what is dio, well from the press reference Rod Humble is quoted as saying:

dio is a new shared creative space on the web, based around the concept of linked spaces, dio makes it easy and fun to create or visit experiences of all kinds. dio is still in development, and we have deliberately kept the tools as broad as possible, but so far our testers have created a vast range of spaces, from wedding keepsakes, to house tours, to games, to rich media-linked chat rooms about sports and ancient history. I’m really looking forward to seeing what people will create now that dio is more widely available.

I think this is something we’re going to need to see in action to really understand what’s going on, but an interesting part of dio is that there’s talk of being able to earn money, initially via ad revenue and further down the line from creations and what makes this press release more positive, from a Second Life perspective, is that Rod Humble even makes a reference to Second Life in the press release! Hurrah!

Linden Lab Launch Another Amazon Offer

Wounded, but not out, Linden Lab have decided to launch another Amazon adventure (that’s Amazon the company, not the wilderness) with an announcement on the blog, which you can read here. This time the blog post contains more information about how the offer works, which is good to see.

This time lucky participants can pick up a hoverboard bonus pack for free until January 29th, the hoverboard bonus pack usually goes for USD$12.95, details of the offer can be found here. In order to claim your free hoverboard you will need to link your Second Life and Amazon accounts, utilising the Amazon game connect feature, which is aimed at free to play MMO’s generally, but as there’s no suitable place for Second Life, which is a Multi User Virtual Environment, it goes in the free to play games section. This is an Amazon issue, not a Linden Lab issue, they’re fitting these offers in the most suitable category.

At least this blog post explains that the offer is only available to customers based in the United States Of America (Boooooo!). Again, this is an Amazon issue, not a Linden Lab issue.

When Offers Go Wrong

Tateru Nino has received word on why the weekend Amazon offer was pulled with a reply from Peter Gray of Linden Lab:

This offer was terminated early due to repeated attempts to circumvent the one-per-customer limit, but we saw great demand for the deal and hope to be able to offer similar special promotions in the future

Inara Pey has decided to award Linden Lab’s Amazon offer the inaugral SL Palme d’Face Award, for not seeing the blindingly obvious. However Linden Lab don’t appear to be the only people unable to see the blindingly obvious, Adobe have been at it this week too.

Yesterday it went viral that you could download the Adobe CS2 suite for free, this included old versions of Photoshop and Illustrator, which generally won’t play nicely with the latest operating systems. This rumour started due to Adobe announcing that the activation servers would be turned off and they placed  the serial numbers on their site, in no time at all word spread that CS2 was now free, people were downloading away like mad and then the links stopped working and Dov Isaacs of Adobe quashed the rumours in a forum thread:

On behalf of Adobe Systems Incorporated …

You have heard wrong! Adobe is absolutely not providing free copies of CS2!

What is true is that Adobe is terminating the activation servers for CS2 and that for existing licensed users of CS2 who need to reinstall their software, copies of CS2 that don’t require activation but do require valid serial numbers are available. (Special serial numbers are provided on the page for each product download.) See <http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1114930>.

You are only legally entitled to download and install with that serial number if you have a valid license to the product!

 – Dov

When I say this rumour about CS2 being free went viral, I’m not talking about forum threads, it was reported by the likes of CNET and Forbes.

Versu Goes Undercover

So yesterday myself and Inara Pey both blogged about Linden Lab’s forthcoming title of Versu. After digging around the official website, we found some information about the title. However it would appear that the information we blogged about wasn’t quite ready for public consumption because, the links to the information relating to the content, have now been removed!

Is this a scurrilous plot? Is this part of the mystery? Did some poor Linden get too many emails? Did someone get overexcited with their links? They would have got away with it if it wasn’t for those pesky kids!

I don’t know why the information has been removed, all I’m saying is, Inara Pey started it all by telling me where the website is in the first place, it wasn’t me Guv, honest!
