Breakthru – Helping Students With Disabilities Embrace Stem Via Second Life

The BreakThru project is sponsored by  Georgia STEM Accessibility Alliance (GSAA) and is a collaboration between the College of Education Learning and Performance Support Lab at the at the University of Georgia and the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA) at Georgia Institute of Technology.

The GSAA is lead by Robert L. Todd of CATEA and Noel Gregg, Ph.D. of the College of Education Learning and Performance Support Lab and is funded by the National Science Foundation Research in Disabilities Education Program.

The project has some noble aims such as encouraging students with disabilities to embrace the learning world of Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths, or STEM for short. They do this via e-learning using different technologies with the aim of allowing the students to participate in an environment that they find more comfortable and with assistance from mentors who encourage the students to succeed. One technology that this project has embraced is Second Life.

There are a couple of articles related to this that go into more depth about the project and the advantages of a virtual environment. The first is from the University Of Georgia’s website : Virtual world helps students ‘break through’ :

For some, an island is a place of retreat or isolation-a place to be alone with your thoughts.

But the virtual island created in BreakThru, a project combining the talents of researchers from UGA and the Georgia Institute of Technology, is a place for students with disabilities who want to work in a discipline related to science, technology, engineering or mathematics, known as STEM fields. Here, students find small mentoring nooks, large classrooms, an amphitheater, floating cafés and lounges, and green space- all computer generated based on the online virtual world Second Life.

Using avatars, this is also a place for students to meet with their mentors, take part in STEM-related experiences such as scavenger hunts, and access more resources through the Internet. BreakThru’s avenues of communication create a relationship called e-mentoring, and it’s breaking new ground in the ways students engage with their mentors.

The article explains how Second Life isn’t the only technology in use, indeed they even say that Second Life is getting old but it does demonstrate the advantages that a virtual world can bring to learning, such as students being able to represent themselves in different ways via use of avatars. Another advantage of a virtual world environment is that it can bring different experiences to people with different disabilities. The article discusses this and includes a quote from Noel Gregg :

Students with Asperger’s syndrome, for example, enjoy meeting others through Second Life, while students who are visually impaired prefer a platform that is voice activated.

“With that virtual platform, we did learn a lot,” Gregg said. “In the development of this virtual environment, we learned different ways to accommodate virtual learning for students with different types of disabilities.”

Visiting The Elven Isle Of Telrunya

The Elven Isle Of Telrunya

This was a risky visit, to say the least. Dwarfins are not usually too friendly with Elven folk but I had been reassured by the good folk behind the Second Life destination guide that I would be granted safe passage for my visit.

Palace

Everyone is welcome I was told, but when you’ve been brought up to never trust elves then you still step forth with some trepidation. However I can report that my visit was a safe and peaceful one, which is why I’m able to relay the tale of my visit to you.

Boat

The Elven Isle Of Telrunya is, I must admit, picturesque. Elves have this thing about water and boats which I’ve never quite come to terms with but they do make for a tranquil way to visit a location.

Massively Will Bite The Dust February 3rd 2015

In a recent post I pondered about the rumours that AOL were likely to close Joystiq and furthermore that this would probably mean the end of Massively. This has now been confirmed by Massively : Massively-that-was :

This week, we learned our AOL overlords have decided that they no longer wish to be in the enthusiast blog business and are shutting all of them down. This mass-sunset includes decade-old gaming journalism icon Joystiq, and therefore, it includes us. February 3rd, 2015, will be the final day of operation for Massively-that-was.

However in a game of prunes, TechCrunch report : AOL To Lay Off About 150 People, Mostly In Sales; Folding Joystiq, TUAW Into Engadget :

Some more details are emerging around AOL’s reorganization plans. Sources tell us that the company will lay off around 150 people, with the majority in sales. As part of it, AOL is also consolidating some websites. Gaming site Joystiq and Apple news site TUAW are both being folded into Engadget

Whereas Gamasutra report :

Joystiq recently celebrated the ten-year anniversary of its launch, in 2004, as a spinoff of AOL’s tech-focused blog Engadget. Going forward, Engadget is expected to take up some of Joystiq and Massively’s responsibilities for game industry reporting.

Unfortunately none of these folding exercises look likely to save any jobs for Massively staff.

Buried From MadPea Games – A Look At The Game

Missing Poster

Buried from MadPea Games is an interactive experience that takes place on several locations across the Second Life grid. The best place to start is of course the starting location, which isn’t yet open to mere mortals, fortunately I managed to sneak in a get a preview.

Whereas I’m not in a position to give the game a full review, I can provide some insight into the game. The starting location is where you get your HUD and start your progress. As in most MadPea games the HUD is important and therefore it’s good to know what it does and how it’s used.

Clicking the ? in the top right hand corner of the HUD helps you to understand the HUD and what you can do with it. The view will change depending upon what you’re doing, sometimes text will appear there, for example. The basic controls allow you to go to Buried Island, get help, which comes via the MadPea website at the moment. There’s an option to join the MadPea group, which will also be a good place to discuss the game. Then there’s the option to go to MadPea’s Facebook page and finally an option to listen to a funky youTube stream whilst playing the game.

However be warned, the game does at times require you to listen to something that is happening inworld via interactions via objects.

The game is linear to a degree, locations need to be unlocked by finding clues in your current location. Available locations are marked with an X. Simply click the x for an available location and you should be teleported there.

There’s also a souvenir shop at the main starting location, which will sell souvenirs but may also have items that will assist you in your quest.

Buried From MadPea Games – The Story Concept And Background Info

Buried The Game

Buried from MadPea Games launches tomorrow and at last night’s blogger preview Kiana Writer, Axiomatic Clarity and Kess Crystal explained some of the story concepts, the work that has gone into the game and a bit about MadPea Games too.

First of all, let’s take a look at the story concept :

BURIED is a story of a writer for self-help books, Lily Morano, who gets interested in geocaching.
She spends the summer on her island writing and researching until she finds C-Me.

C-Me is a highly secret organization providing interactive geocaching and is invite only.
The C-Me capsules contain cameras and record the treasure hunters, allowing them to leave messages for each other.

Lily receives the app and starts the hunt. However, she realizes that something sinister is going on and gets involved into something big and evil..

The game begins when Lily has been missing for two weeks. Her husband is offering a $500 000 reward for the one to find her as the Police has been completely useless with their search.

Equipped with their tablets, the players will find Lily’s hidden ‘Lilypad’ and learn about C-Me and start a search through the grid to discover a thrilling story.

————————————————————————————-

BURIED is happening at the current time and date.

The game is described by MadPea as an interactive adventure and there’s a lot of detail regarding the game in a blog post from MadPea :

We all know, however, that there will be more to this … much more. A story, a HUD to help us carry out the adventure, objects to interact with for clues, hints, and tools to use to find our answers of the day. We’ll also get sent all around the grid in search of clues to further the story, and get closer to solving the mystery.

This is a grid wide interactive adventure, it’s more than a simple hunt, you’re going to have to work for rewards in this game, although there will be a group inworld which will aid people to share hints, tips and troubleshooting.
