Tyche Shepherd’s Awesome Private Estate Survey March 2016

Tyche “Statto” Shepherd has published her first private estate survey for over two years and it makes for very interesting reading. Tyche’s last private estate survey was published in November 2013. This survey covers Second Life only.

The methodology for these surveys is, to quote Tyche :

these results are based on a sample of 5000 randomly selected private estate regions designed to estimate full/ Homestead/ Openspace penetration.

So with that said let’s get straight to comparisons.

November 2013

  • Full Regions : 2,368
  • Homestead Regions : 2,005
  • Openspace : 29
  • Closed to Public : 598

March 2016

  • Full Regions : 2,266
  • Homestead Regions : 1,921
  • Openspace : 21
  • Closed to Public : 792

Now remember that this is a survey, not a comparison of the overall number of regions, the above comparisons designed to gauge an idea of how the land lies regarding the type of regions in terms of the percentage of the grid they occupy.

November 2013 Accessible Regions (4,402)

  • Full Regions : 53.8%
  • Homestead Regions : 45.5%
  • Openspace : 0.7%

March 2016 Accessible Regions (4,208)

  • Full Regions : 53.9%
  • Homestead Regions : 45.6%
  • Openspace : 0.5%

Tyche comments further on the methodology for this survey :

The Margins of Error are +/-1.30% , +/- 1.29% and +/-0.21% respectively for the three figures figure at the 95% confidence level.

Remember the above is part of a survey, not an overall comparison of the number of regions on the grid. Tyche does comment on the numbers overall in her commentary, but we’ll come to that later.

As we can see from the comparisons, the shape of the grid in terms of the percentage of Full, Homestead and Openspace regions has changed very little in the period between November 2013 and March 2016.

Private Regions Tread Water Just Above The 20,000 Mark

Me And Gnomes

Like a plucky last wicket stand by Australian batsmen at the first ashes test, Private sims are desperately clinging on to their status above the 20,000 mark, with the latest Tyche Shepherd survey revealing there are 20,006 private sims on the grid.

Like the plucky last wicket stand, resistance to going below the 20,000 barrier would appear to be somewhat futile. the amount of private sims on the grid will dip below the 20,000 mark soon. However a couple of weeks ago, on June 30th, Tyche was reporting that private sims had descreased by 4.6% for the year, with a loss of 959 sims, which at that point left 20,033 private sims on the grid. However by the same time last year there had been a decline for the year of 5.2%, 1,230 sims, so the rate of decline is slowing although it shows no signs of stopping.

The tier remains too high and slashing tier would probably halt the decline, but that would hit revenue for Linden Lab. There are other underlying factors behind the decline. The reasons for the decline are not just due to the costs of tier or even the change in dynamics brought about by the rise of the Marketplace.

Tyche Shepherd’s Awesome Mainland Census – March 2012

Tyche “Statto” Shepherd, who was recently interviewed by Hamlet Au over at New World Notes, has unveiled her latest work in the shape and form of her March Mainland Census, which you can read in full over at SLUniverse by clicking here.

The census tells us that mainland regions have stabilised since December and remain at 6,723, this is still a record figure but it’s the same figure from the December census.  This figure excludes Linden owned regions such as help islands and Linden realms, which in themself amount to a figure of around 500.

The census reveals good and bad news, the good news is that ownership of parcels is up, by 0.2%, this means that more unique avatars own land than the previous census. The figures Tyche gives us reveal that this amounts to 68,485 unique owners, with individual parcel owners at 56,660, up 163 from December’s census, whereas 12,825 groups own land, down 14 since December.

However on the bad news side, abandoned land is now at record levels, of between 7.2 – 8.3% of mainland abandoned. Tyche informs us that this is an equivalent of 484 to 557 full regions, which is rather shocking when you think about it but I’m not sure what Linden Lab can do about that, moving people would cause chaos and mayhem and have people searching for their pitchforks left, right and centre! The increase in abandoned land since December is estimated by Tyche to be the equivalent of 27-30 regions.
