Philip Rosedale Wants His Old Second Life Avatar Back

Second Life's Third Birthday 002

When Second Life turned three, Torley took the above photo, it shows Philip Rosedale, founder of Linden Lab, in his iconic avatar.

Moving on far more years than most of us want to admit, Philip Rosedale can be found in High Fidelity, looking much more like Philip Rosedale does outside the virtual world. In the below image, Philip is on the left side of the stage talking to Kent Bye of Voices of VR Podcast.

Philip and Kent

The video of that chat can be found here by the way, it was a fascinating and very interesting discussion, if you have time I definitely recommend that you watch it.

Tribeca Film Festival To Feature Virtual Reality & Philip Rosedale

The Tribeca Film Festival® is set to run April 13th April 24th 2016 and news about the festival is starting to appear. The first round of speakers have been announced.  Tina Fey and Tom Hanks are grabbing the headlines for their part in; Tribeca Talks: Storytellers platform, and I do love storytelling but this year’s festival is also taking a look at technology and innovation :

On April 19, it’ll be home to Imagination Day, powered by the Hatchery. The industry’s top minds will convene for an all-day summit focused on, “What happens when our wildest dreams become reality, and what will that reality be in our not-so-distant future?” The first round of confirmed speakers is no joke: entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, founder and chairman of the Virgin Group, and business leader and product innovator Regina Dugan, of Google ATAP. The Hub will also host the following esteemed VR creatives and tech entrepreneurs: Second Life and High Fidelity founder Philip Rosedale, VR directors Félix Lajeunesse and Paul Raphaël of Felix & Paul Studios, and STRIVR founder and CEO Derek Belch.

Imagination day sounds like quite an interesting day, although there aren’t many firm details just yet.

From The Huffington Post – Second Life: How a Virtual World Became a Reality

I saw a post over at SLUniverse from Cristiano (SLU head honcho) linking to an article by Peter Diamandis on The Huffington Post – Second Life: How a Virtual World Became a Reality. The article is based on an interview with Philip Rosedale, AKA Philip Linden, once Second Life’s head honcho. The post makes for an interesting read, although it should be pointed out that Peter Diamandis is a friend of Philip Rosedale, which he states in the article.

This means the article is positive, hurrah! What I like about the article is that you get a glimpse of how excited Philip was about creating a virtual world, Second Life may or may not have turned out how Philip expected, I’m pretty sure he once said he expected it might look like New York. However he envisaged a virtual world and he got one and it will go down in history as being revolutionary.

The key to a virtual world going from being a dream to reality was, it seems, tied to broadband over DSL. This breakthrough left Philip realising that a virtual world was indeed a possibility. However just how expensive these dreams can be is also explained in the article, Philip had USD$1million to invest , largely due to making money when Real Networks, where he worked, went public. However this was not enough to get started, Phlip is quoted as saying: “Unfortunately, even with my $1 million it wasn’t fundable.

However some people such as Mitch Kapor of Lotus 1-2-3 fame were on hand to provide help and Second Life was born.

Steller Sunshine And Philip Linden Turn 10!

Second Life has many landmarks and I don’t mean the ones you put in your inventory, ok we’lll include them too! However a big one was reached yesterday, prompted by a post earlier in the month from Hamlet Au, Steller Sunshine has now reached the grand old age of ten, according to Steller’s profile anyway which has a birthdate of 13th March 2002! Steller Sunshine is considered to be the first official non Linden resident to grace the grid.

According to Hamlet, Steller is from South California, a web designer and a mother of four. Steller’s official birthdate makes her an older resident than Philip Linden whose official birthdate was 14th March 2002! Which means Philip’s avatar officially turns 10 today, so he should be promising us something, instead of his new venture over at I Promise Philip where people are promising to meet goals or pay Philip money! Beer and Cake will do!

According to Second Life Wikia Steller created a beanstalk, which Hamlet Au told us back in 2008 ,was SL’s first instance of user created content, Steller is also credited with creating a treehouse and the Governor’s mansion, is this true? The Governor’s mansion? The mansion of the mysterious Governor Linden? Governor Linden didn’t arrive until September 2002 so is a noob compared to Steller and Philip and rumour has it Governor Linden is a bit like Doctor Who in having many guises.

Pie And Power

I went and took a look at Philip Rosedale’s new venture today, Coffee and Power, and was struck by how good a concept this is. Basically people ask for things to be done, offer some sort of fee for the mission and then await responses. Unfortunately it’s only available right now in San Francisco, where the website tells us all great ideas start but I can recall watching Karl Malden going around the streets of San Francisco as a kid and it didn’t seem like a great idea then!

The thing I like about this site though is that it looks fun, although a lot of the requests are “Bring me a sarnie” at the moment, it has potential. However I’m wondering why this isn’t being implemented in Second Life!
