Kevin M Thomas is a name that should be familiar to fans of live music in Second Life. Kevin has been performing in Second Life since 2007 and has an inworld group with over 7,000 fans.

Being a musician of course is a portable skill and Kevin is taking advantage of that portable skill by taking his performances to other platforms. Today Kevin will be performing at a music jam event at 15:30 PDT in High Fidelity at hifi://open. That’s 23:30 British Summer Time … I think!

Kevin recently spoke to Caitlyn Meeks, Director of Content for High Fidelity and Caitlyn has posted some of that conversation in a blog post : Live Performance in High Fidelity.

There are some great points in this blog post and one of them is an issue I’ve raised before, the potential for Worldwide reach in virtual worlds, Kevin says :

Performing in VR requires incredible energy as a performer as you do not normally get the fan feedback as you would in real life, however the payoff is greater as you can build a much larger fan base in VR as no one is limited by where they live to attend a show.

Worldwide reach doesn’t just cover musicians, back in March I blogged : Comedian Sami Shah Exemplifies The Advantages Of Virtual World Reach. Storytellers, artists and film makers can all build reach via Virtual Worlds and as we move forward, more immersive Virtual Reality environments.

Jordan Reyne Stage

Jordan Reyne this evening rocked the Mango Yacht Club in Second Life with her unique sound. The good news is that Jordan is scheduled to rock Second Life even further this weekend with more gigs before going on a real world music tour in Europe.

Jordan Reyne On Guitar

Jordan belted out several tunes to an eager audience and allowed them to vote on which cover song she should perform, there was only one cover song in her set, the rest of the set was original material from Jordan herself.

Jordan Reyne Sings

Jordan doesn’t just stand there and play music either, she interacts with her audience, which was very well exemplified by the above vote on which cover song she should perform.

So a man walks into a bar, he drinks a couple of pints and then along comes the singer, her name isn’t Pearl and she’s not standing up to play the piano, although her job is entertaining folks. Now there’s something familiar about this singer, but he can’t quite figure out what until he hits a Kevin Bacon moment and he realises this singer is Lady Sakai’s mate!

Now fortunately it’s way too early in the night for alcohol to be giving the impression that a Second Life avatar is on stage. However there is concern that a paradox may be caused in the lines of time, space and virtuality that could cause one world or another to implode.

He glances to the stage where the computer running the backing tracks has broken, uh oh, is it all going to go tits up here in the bar and I’m not even drunk yet!

This past year it seems we have been hit with so many natural disasters.  We have been asked time and time again to reach into our pockets and GIVE.  To the point that we want to cry and say STOP.  Well, I wish that were the case here and now……but it is not.  I am asking again

As most of you know who read this blog, SL Home and Garden Expo ended the weekend before last. During the time of the expo, I had the opportunity to work closely with, and to get to know this amazing person. A person who gives so much of herself that at the end of the day she literally falls into bed exhausted.  Who works almost year round to successfully raise funds for RFL.  Such is her belief in what she does. Not only does SHE do this, her son walks in her footsteps. So let me introduce you to Nikki Mathieson, oh yes and you may remember (or not) an interview I did with her son Damian Carbenell a few months ago.

Damian and Jez

If you have a passion for something, you get a 50 dollar guitar at a pawn shop, whatever it takes.

Damian Carbenell

having, compelled by, or ruled by intense emotion or strong feeling; fervid: a passionate advocate of socialism. an outburst of strong emotion or feeling:  expressing, showing, or marked by intense or strong feeling; emotional: passionate language.

Passion, passionate – these words define Damian Carbenell, the man and his music.

Damian Carbenell is a young man who has been passionate about his song, his music, his life since before he can remember.  At the ripe age of, well, forever, it was his uncle, who was in an 80’s hair band, who was fun, childish in nature, big into music, who introduced Damian to what has become his way of life. Damian at Sweet Whispers

Damian doesn’t remember a time when he wasn’t singing. He was beating on pots and pans by 5. When he was in the 1st grade he entered a school talent show. He was the youngest one there, and second to last to perform.  With his grandfather playing guitar, Damian sang “Let there be peace on Earth“. He sang to a packed audience, but when he was finished there was not a sound made.  At first he thought no one liked it, he couldn’t understand why everyone was so quiet.  He didn’t understand that at the time we were at war (Desert Storm) and there were tears in the eyes of his audience.  Damian had chosen THAT song because it was a song he sang in church.  It was THAT night; he said he felt that the fates came together.  THAT night was the night the fire was lit…..his passion….his direction.

By the 4th grade, in a red leather jacket with zippers all over, penny loafers, and black pants he sang his heart out to MJ’s “Beat It” choreographed with his 3 back up dancers…his music was evolving. Continue reading »

AE n Jez“I will hold you like a melody;
Sing each word into your soul;
Breathing in your skin, you speak to me;
And I cry”

I’ve seen and heard AcousticEnergy Nitely perform before, but recently I was able to go listen and watch AE “let his hair down” for lack of a better way to describe his show that night….A friend tp’d me to where AE was singing and the first thing I saw pop on my screen was “Ae has the most sexiest voice in sl” (copy, pasted).  So, being the woman I am…..of course I paid close attention.  I heard this sweet male voice….with just a hint of an accent (Scottish, I believe) and decided to save the rest of this commentary until I finished the interview, which follows.

AcousticEnergy Nitely first started messing with music and the guitar as a teenager.  He would strum a 12 string Yamaha guitar that belonged to his buddy, Rob Wier, and listen to the sounds he could make.  His mother put on lay-a-way, his first 6 string Honer guitar which, with the help of his friend Rob, he learned to play basic guitar.  AE was into writing poetry at this point in his life and though he may not have known it at the time, had started his song writing career also.   Such originals as Rise and Breathe On Me Continue reading »
