A Visit to See Tonight Live With Paisley Beebe

On Sunday, as it was a bank holiday Monday, I decided to stay up late and go and watch Tonight Live With Paisley Beebe…. well actually I was going to see Tonight Live With Lady Sakai, but Paisley Beebe does the interviews. I hadn’t been to see the inworld chat show for ages, I think Sarah Nerd was being interviewed last time I went, this isn’t because the show is rubbish, it’s actually very well done, but 2am on a Sunday morning isn’t a great time for me, this is 6PM SLT, so for many of you it’s a great time.

Anyway, I sat at the back and settled down to watch events unfold.

Me Tonight Live

Maybe it’s just me, but crossed legs poses don’t do my evil drow wizard image a lot of good! Where was I, oh yes, the chat show ….

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT — Pre Fabulous

Pre Fabulous Store Front
Pre Fabulous Store Front

*Pre Fabulous*

Pre Fabulous began in 2006 when Fornicola Butuzova and Amo Lambeau began creating buildings they sold, to earn spending money to support their shopping and partying habits in Second Life. Sale by sale their business grew until 2009 when they both decided that it was time to go full time and create homes, stores, and other buildings in Second Life for a living.

Pre Fabulous does not follow the “Features and Fashion” way of thinking about building in SL, they rather take a more narrative approach to serving the needs of Second Life residents. Their belief is that people come to Second Life to realize fantasies or express some other ideal of themselves. If they want to fall in love in a tropical paradise, be the toast of the Manhattan skyline, or the Lord of a mighty kingdom, whatever their dream maybe they need help.

Rather than chase trends, Forni and Amo, focused on helping Second Life players tell their story. They created buildings that have a reason for existing, buildings that convey an emotional connection to the story their customers want to tell. One of their core beliefs is “A house is made of bricks… A home is made of cracks”. It is the cracks that tell the story of a house that say something about why it is there, who lived there, of the experiences that were shared, between its walls. Kitely has potential but Second Life is still the Daddy

Kitely, an Opensim based virtual world provider, has been talked about by Maria Korolov over at Hypergrid Business and Hamlet Au over at New World Notes. The system, running from Amazon’s cloud services has some interesting concepts and some great potential, it’s also far from ready for prime time and very new.

Interesting points to note are that sims can go to sleep when not in use, rather quickly I’m told, this is an important concept because the billing policy of Kitely is per visitor minute, rather than a flat fee. That’s an interesting way of doing things. Logins are managed via Facebook connect, this for me is an absolute dealbreaker and no amount of saying lots of people use Facebook connect will change my mind, when that’s the only login choice in town, I simply choose not to engage. I’ve currently got Facebook blocked on my firewall, if I have a need to use it I’ll unblock it.

However plenty of folk are happy as Larry to use Facebook connect and therefore, Kitely is worthy of discussion, plus it’s a virtual world and I’m interested in them, and it’s my blog, so neener neener.

A Message To Business: Don’t Ignore Second Life

I attended the best Robin Linden office hour for quite some time this week. The discussion largely centred around the trademark policy. However bigger issues were forthcoming such as the grid, be it the Second Life we know and love (no really we love it) or the bigger Second Life grid of which the Second Life world is just a part.

Personally I think Second Life should be the world, ran on Second Life technology but the grid, the bigger beast, the all encompassing umbrella, should be the Linden Lab grid. What’s in a name? Perception and perception is everything. Business whom have read horror stories of being griefed by flying penises in Second Life, can incorporate their own little universe under the umbrella name and avoid the dirt of being associated with Second Life. Trademark Issues Lead to Promotion Of Alternatives

JISC is the Joint Information Systems Committee, based in the UK to help the use of ICT in education and research. They fund a series of mailing lists to benefit learning, teaching and research.

I’m on a few of these mailing lists as I work in the education sector, one of the mailing lists I’m on is the Second Life mailing list.

However today the issue that has been raised is regarding renaming the Second Life mailing list due to Linden Lab’s trademark policy. The proposal now is to rename the mailing list to “Virtual Worlds” to avoid any problems with the trademark policy and also to open the mailing list up to the discussion of other virtual worlds. Some people are piping up that this is a good idea with OpenSim based grids popping up and others are saying that they’re not sure what LL’s game is with the trademark policy.
