The Prim Strikes Back

There’s a lot of talk about Mesh, whether it will be good, whether it will be bad, however another side of the mesh project that is receiving a lot less attention is the boost for the prim. If you go to a mesh enabled sim, without needing to pass the mesh test or have payment info on file, you can create very large prims!

Why are large prims any use? Well they simply are, this is why we’ve had megaprims in Second Life for years, unsupported it should be added, but they’ve been here and people have used them because they save prim space and soon, they will be offiically supported at a whopping size of 64 x 64.

Mesh Moves Closer, Master Account Doesn’t

As reported by Inara Pey, you can now find your mesh upload status in your account details on the official Second Life page for your account. Unless you have the right payment info status and have taken the quiz (the link for which you will find on your account information) you won’t be able to upload mesh.

There is also an official mesh update blog post explaining what will be happening during the next stage of testing mesh, as it stands it will only be available on certain sims (they were looking for volunteers) and anything uploaded has the potential to break, so don’t go making anything permanent just yet.

Another Fine Mesh They’re Getting Us Into

I’m afraid I’m going to have to depart from the general love in on the mesh upload requirements, as revealed here by Tateru Nino. I’m not a fan of how this is being presented, nor am I a fan of the implications of it. The proposed requirements are listed on the official Second Life Wiki, under Mesh Upload Enablement.

This isn’t all bad, there will be a tutorial for starters which is long overdue. However the PIOF requirement I’m not fan of because we still have this absurd situation in Second Life where I can’t just have one account and multiple alts. This is an absurd requirement to receive a flag, my NPIOF alts can go to adult land because I submitted a support ticket, I didn’t have to get them PIOF status and I didn’t have to get them age verified. This whole individual account business is a nonsense.

Beyond that, there are people who can’t, for whatever reason, buy Linden dollars from Linden Lab, they use third party exchanges such as Virwox. The folk who buy from third party exchanges do put money into Second Life and do contribute to the overall economy, why should they be discriminated against?

Another issue of course is that it goes against the ethos of user creation to limit it in a fashion such as this, although it should be noted that at one time Second Life required people provide credit card details to engage, this was also a time when there were a lot less users.

Will Mesh Finally Make A Decent Viewer 2 Sales Pitch?

KirstenLee Cinquetti, Third Party Viewer developer extraordinaire, makes an appeal on her blog for people to switch over to viewer 2:

Now comes an appeal. Things are getting to a point where I suspect mesh will very shortly arrive onto the grid along with lots of new features. I strongly believe some will appear in the next development cycle. There is one problem.. 1.23 based clients! The whole deal is being right royally hampered and delayed by the insistence in keeping this client alive.

I honestly do not care what your viewer preference may be.. But I really implore you to switch to V2 based solutions (even if this causes some pain). Firestorm, Kokua, daveP’s funk special, it does not matter, the sooner the better. See the world with my eyes!”

Viewer 2 has since its inception been given a frosty welcome, and this goes back to the closed beta period, as the leaked feedback that made its way to The Alphaville Herald revealed. The simple fact of the matter is that Viewer 2 has been unloved, will Mesh change that?

2011 – Linden Lab really need to listen to their users

2011 promises to be an interesting year for Second Life, a new CEO, Mesh, LL finally looking at inworld activities other than shopping if their blog post about games in Second Life is anything to go by.

The Linden Department of public works, who don’t get anywhere near enough credit, have been quietly going about their business of installing switches on the railway network known as the SLRR, as explained here by Michael Linden.

These are the sort of posts we should see more of, more what’s happening inworld, more on developments, more on what people who don’t want to run a business but want to come here and have fun can do, this is the sales pitch, this is where marketing can triumph.
