LaTurbo Avedon Talks To ArtSlant About Art And Digital Existence

Christian Petersen over at ArtSlant has published a great interview : The Wednesday Web Artist of the Week: LaTurbo Avedon. This is an interview with digital/virtual artist, LaTurbo Avedon but what makes the interview great for me is that it goes beyond artwork and delves into areas of avatar identity, creative spaces and much more.

I speak a lot about how good Draxtor Despres Drax Files : World Makers series is, because it gets to the real physical person behind the avatar, but Christian highlights another way of how avatars can evolve and how lines between the physical and virtual world can blur :

The artist LaTurbo Avedon may be a computer-created avatar but she is very much alive. Her identity has been created through very real experiences and interactions over numerous websites, social platforms, and gaming consoles. The notion that there is a “real” person behind the avatar becomes increasingly meaningless as the division between all of our online and IRL identities blur and dissipate.

That’s a fascinating way of looking at how avatars can evolve. LaTurbo Avedon has evolved via many platforms but she has deep roots in Second Life which go all the way back to 2006 and in her time in Second Life LaTurbo built and ran a club, which exemplifies a strong engagement with the environment because running clubs, even in the virtual world, is not as easy as some may think.

Watercolors In The Rain Brings David Lavigne’s Book To An Interactive Art Installation In Second Life

Watercolours In The Rain

It is 1888, a battle-torn and weary America is still reeling from a war against itself. Although it has known peace for twenty-years, old hatreds still remain. American born Aubrey Lancaster has fled to London with her family, hiding from the secrets of their past and looking to start over. Aubrey soon finds that London has problems of its own. A killer roams its streets, one unlike the world has ever seen before! In the realm of vampires, werewolves, druids and witches, catching a killer is nothing more than opening your eyes to what really exists around you, a world which very few can truly see. But, make no mistake, it is there!

So reads the blurb on Amazon for the book Watercolors In The Rain (The Whitechapel in Red Series Book 1) by David J Lavigne. Now parts of that book have made their way to Second Life, courtesy of an interactive art installation supported by The Linden Endowment For The Arts.

Gone Fishing

We are invited to take a journey into the mind of the author at the installation, which has been put together by a team working with David Lavigne to bring chapters of the book to Second Life and the scenery is pretty damn impressive. I could be a tad biased here, I like this sort of thing. I’m also a massive fan of storytelling in all its forms.

The University Of The Arts In Second Life

Information Point

The Linden Endowment for the Arts (LEA) is an artistic program in Second Life with a very noble mission :

The Linden Endowment for the Arts (LEA) was established to help create a center of arts activity in Second Life. It is a collaborative venture between Linden Lab and the arts community. Guided by a dedicated board of renowned Second Life artists, the LEA is committed to providing access to engaging experiences in the arts for the Second Life community. Through its exhibitions, programs, and events, the LEA fosters awareness of artists’ contributions to our virtual world and encourages others to get involved and be inspired.

The LEA is run and organized by users of Second Life, with resources generously donated by Linden Lab.

Applicants put forth proposals for an exhibit and those who are selected by a committee get six months use of a sim for their project. In the latest round (round 9) one of the successful applicants was Carla Ives, who is creating a University of The Arts project.

University Of The Arts

The project will have exhibition space, with a young artist having a permanent exhibition there. There are also plans to incorporate a learning space within this project which will be designed to teach people how to make a dance show in Second Life. This will go through the process of building a set, choreography, use of particles and animations.

Art & Obedience Is Well Worth A Viewing In Second Life

Obedience and TV

Inara Pey has already made a superb blog post about Obedience in Second Life, so I will try and refrain from covering all of the same ground, but it’s inevitable that there will be some crossover.

Obedience is An Installation in 15 Rooms by Saskia Boddeke & Peter Greenaway at the Jewish Museum in Berlin. The exhibit started on May 22nd and will be running until September 13th.

Saskia Boddeke is also known as Rose Borchovski in Second Life, whereas Peter Greenaway is a British Film director of films such as The Belly of an Architect and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover amongst many others. Peter Greenaway has also been known to use Second Life.

Now if you’re wondering what an exhibit at the Jewish Museum in Berlin has to do with Second Life, it’s because there’s also a Second Life version of the exhibit running at LEA1 in Second Life which has been brought to life thanks to the fine work of Bryn Oh and Jo Ellsmere.

The Lost Unicorn Gallery Is A Sight To Behold

LostUnicron3

The Lost Unicorn Gallery in the sim of Ethereal is nothing short of stunning if fantasy art is your thing, and it is my thing. I’m a big fan of the fantasy theme. The parcel description sets the theme :

A fabulous selection of SL fantasy themed artwork created by the best artists in game. Elven castle overlooks a beautiful and magical forest below. Landscaping by JenniferMay Carlucci-Lectar.

This is all helped by the stunning picturesque beauty of the surrounding area.

The Gallery works on a rotation system, as the notecard explains :

The main list you see on this sign is a complete list of ALL the ongoing artists in the gallery. However, they are not all showing work at the same time due to space. Therefore, we do an artist rotation every 2 months. I will post this list here so you all know who’s showing at the time you visit. We will also continue to have our 2 featured artists exhibiting their work in the 2 front rooms every month (new ones each month).

This therefore means you may see different artists displaying at different times.

The current showcase artists (until March 22nd are :

  • Freyja Merryman
