Visiting Virtual Dublin In The Rare Old Times

Centre Of Dublin

Virtual Dublin in Second Life has been around for a long time but it’s still a joy to visit. The first sim was opened on 29th April, 2006. There are now three sims joined together, Dublin, Dublin 2 and Dublin 3. The regions have gained attention outside of the virtual world environment,  a St Patrick’s Day parade organised by Tourism Ireland back in 2008 was held there and it’s not difficult to see why this would have been considered such a good location for that event.

Box Junction

The theme of the Sim is of course based on Dublin In Ireland and they have attempted to recreate the look and feel of part of the city, mainly O’Connell Street, Trinity College, St. Stephens Green, Guinness Brewery and Temple Bar area of Dublin including Grafton Street, Halfpenny Bridge, and Millenium Spire.

Looking Across Dublin 2

The Mayor of Dublin in Second Life is also the owner, Ham Rambler. The impressive recreation of Dublin has led to many Dubliners who have visited the sim saying “it’s just like being there!

Edge Of Dublin 2

The first expansion to Dublin came in the shape and form of Dublin 2 Shamrogue Island. Here you can enjoy swimming, sailing, walking, driving, air travel and underwater diving.

Dublin 2 With Linden Lab Office

Dublin 2 is also home to a Linden Lab office.

Dublin 3

The next expansion came in the shape and form of Dublin 3. This continues the theme of trying to recreate the photorealistic look of Dublin.

Park in Dublin

The sims are easy to navigate with roads and bridges helping to direct you along you way. However if you do get tired, you can take a rest in a park.

Grafton Street

Grafton Street in Dublin makes an appearance and here you also get the feeling that there’s a commercial side to the sims as shops are rented out here. Inded there are plenty of merchants selling their wares here.

Blarney Stone

There are also a number of events here including live music and DJ’s. The main entertainment locations appear to be bar based with The Blarney Stone Irish Bar, The Try Line Sports Bar and  Fibber Magees Nightclub offering entertainment to visitors.

Actually I’ve been here before for an event, all the way back in 2009, Robin Linden’s leaving do was held in this area. The photo below shows us all waiting patiently for a sim to come back online after some glitches had caused a few problems.

Waiting by the bridge after the crash

The sims are well built and scenes load well here, it’s a nice place to visit and it has played an important role in promoting Second Life to a wider audience.

Dublin

This remarkable recreation of Dublin’s downtown area is full of interesting attractions and replete with Irish hospitality, bars, music, and great company.
