Linden Lab Report Performance Improvements

I have this issue when I login that I only have L$20 for quite some time, some days this is because I really do only have L$20, but most of the time, that’s not the issue! However I have found teleports fine lately, group profiles do load, albeit a bit slowly and I get random messages about not changing moving parts, or something like that. However things seem to generally work when I teleport and I don’t get logged out as often as I once did.

Now whether this is down to recent performance improvements, I have no idea, but in a surprise move,Linden Lab have actually decided to use their own blog for something other than the flickr pic of the day. They have blogged about recent performance improvements … it’s a bit statto and geeky but there is a nice graph.

Actually, removing my tongue from my cheek, the improvements due to “An optimization on a single query against the read pool of one of the main core database clusters” do make impressive reading.

The cluster itself has saw a 75% reduction in load, during peak concurrency there has been a 7% improvement in the performance of teleports and a very impressive reduction in group query times of a whopping 86%.

How they measure these things I have no idea, but there are two positives about this, one is that Linden Lab are witnessing performance improvements, we may not feel them all the time but they measure these stats and therefore must have ample evidence of the improvements.

The second positive is Linden Lab actually blogging, it may be a bit of a statto geeky blog, but I don’t mind that at all, I’m just happy that they are using their blog, let’s hope that they can also report by the end of the year that has been an x percentage amount of improvement in blog activity outside the flickr pic of the day. I do like the pic of the day posts, but I most certainly miss the Linden’s talking to us.

Talking of Linden’s, Hamlet Au over at New World Notes has a blog post up which has a photograph of Linden’s in their office in 2005. Hamlet points out that only a handful are still at the lab, the only person I recognise is Philip, but he is a well known face, the others, I have no idea! The post is here. A fuller version of the photograph can be seen here, courtesy of former Linden, Jeska Kittenbrink’s blog, geeks with drinks. I love pictures like this, I just wish I had names to go with it. I am a fan of the history of Linden Lab and Second Life and I wish there were more resources around, maybe there are and I just haven’t found them.

Back in those days the Linden’s did talk, a lot. 2005 was before my time but I did used to have fun trawling the old forum archives and reading what went on in the world then, there was a lot of communication, there was also a lot of controversy.

Those days are gone, but hopefully we will get back to some better communications via the blog from the Linden’s, one can hope anyway!
