Scripted Tools For Estate Owners And Managers Coming To A Sim near You Soon

As we ponder what the hell is going on with Olivia Dunham Torley it’s time to take a peek at what those sneaky Lindens are doing at the beta server office hours. Cerise Sorbet was quick to spot a new LSL scripting command being announced, and posted to the official forum about it. Coming soon, well if you’re on BlueSteel it’s already here, is llManageEstateAccess:

  • integer llManageEstateAccess(integer action, key id)
  • Use to add or remove agents from the estate’s agent access or ban lists or groups from the estate’s group access list.
  • Only works for objects owned by the Estate Owner or an Estate Manager.
  • Calls are throttled at a rate of 30 calls per 30 seconds.
  • Returns TRUE is action is sent to the database.
  • Returns FALSE if throttled, invalid action, invalid or null id or object owner is not allowed to manage the estate.

Actions for llManageEstateAccess:

  • ESTATE_ACCESS_ALLOWED_AGENT_ADD: Add the agent to this estate’s Allowed Residents list.
  • ESTATE_ACCESS_ALLOWED_AGENT_REMOVE: Remove the agent from this estate’s Allowed Residents list.
  • ESTATE_ACCESS_ALLOWED_GROUP_ADD: Add the group to this estate’s Allowed groups list.
  • ESTATE_ACCESS_ALLOWED_GROUP_REMOVE: Remove the group from this estate’s Allowed groups list.
  • ESTATE_ACCESS_BANNED_AGENT_ADD: Add the agent to this estate’s Banned residents list.
  • ESTATE_ACCESS_BANNED_AGENT_REMOVE: Remove the agent from this estate’s Banned residents list.

This has potential!

Now you might be thinking, this is of no use, and for many Second Life users, it will be of no use, but for estate managers and estate owners this could well make life easier, it doesn’t have any funky features or additional abilities to the existing estate tools, but it could well make adding people to estate access and ban lists a lot easier. This could also mean people can automate and clear lists over timed periods, as well as allowing people with a bit of database know how, the ability to ban people via their own website.

Hand your estate managers a hud that they can use, with a bit of scripting and the use of llTextBox they won’t even need to go near the region settings in the client, there’s definite potential here.

This might not be the most earth shattering development, but on the face of it, it looks like a decent development. However, I’d like to see tools like this extended to groups and parcel lists, not being able to easily add people to a group from outside Second Life is painful being as groups are such an important feature, I know people who have their own security solutions via website databases to control who can enter a sim, scripted functionality for groups that doesn’t involve the use of a bot would be a huge bonus.

Having said that, I don’t want to sound like I’m ungrateful about the estate tool, or get too greedy with my wishlists, this is a useful development, albeit one that most people won’t even notice due to them not being estate owners or managers.
